We consider symmetric second-order differential operators with real coefficients such that the corresponding differential equation is in the limit circle case at infinity. Our goal is to construct the theory of self-adjoint realizations of such operators by an analogy with the case of Jacobi operators. We introduce a new object, the quasiresolvent of the maximal operator, and use it to obtain a very explicit formula for the resolvents of all self-adjoint realizations. In particular, this yields a simple representation for the Cauchy-Stieltjes transforms of the spectral measures playing the role of the classical Nevanlinna formula in the theory of Jacobi operators.

We prove that the characteristic Jacobi operator on a contact metric three manifold is semiparallel if and only if it vanishes. We determine Lie groups of dimension three admitting left invariant contact metric structures such that the characteristic Jacobi operators are pseudoparallel.

AbstractWe address the computational spectral theory of Jacobi operators that are compact perturbations of the free Jacobi operator via the asymptotic properties of a connection coefficient matrix. In particular, for Jacobi operators that are finite-rank perturbations we show that the computation of the spectrum can be reduced to a polynomial root finding problem, from a polynomial that is derived explicitly from the entries of a connection coefficient matrix. A formula for the spectral measure of the operator is also derived explicitly from these entries. The analysis is extended to trace-class perturbations. We address issues of computability in the framework of the Solvability Complexity Index, proving that the spectrum of compact perturbations of the free Jacobi operator is computable in finite time with guaranteed error control in the Hausdorff metric on sets.

Abstract We study a Miura-type transformation between Kac - van Moerbeke (Volterra) and Toda lattices in terms of the inverse spectral problem for Jacobi operators, which appear in the Lax representation for such systems. This inverse problem method, which amounts to reconstruction of the operator from the moments of its Weyl function, can be used in solving initial-boundary value problem for both systems. It is shown that the Miura transformation can be easily described in terms of these moments. Using this description we establish a bijection between the Volterra lattices and the class of Toda lattices which is characterized by positivity of Jacobi operators in their Lax representation. Also, we discuss an implication of the latter result to the spectral theory.

Along a transversal geodesic γ whose tangent belongs to the contact distribution D, we define the transversal Jacobi operator Rγ=R(·,γ˙)γ˙ on an almost contact Riemannian manifold M. Then, using the transversal Jacobi operator Rγ, we give a new characterization of the Sasakian sphere. In the second part, we characterize the complete ruled real hypersurfaces in complex hyperbolic space.
