This article is a contribution to the study of the automorphism groups of 3-[Formula: see text] designs. Let [Formula: see text] be a non-trivial 3-[Formula: see text] design. If a two-dimensional projective linear group [Formula: see text] acts flag-transitively on [Formula: see text], then [Formula: see text] is a 3-[Formula: see text] or 3-[Formula: see text] design.

Abstract Let k be a field, $x_1, \dots , x_n$ be independent variables and let $L_n = k(x_1, \dots , x_n)$ . The symmetric group $\operatorname {\Sigma }_n$ acts on $L_n$ by permuting the variables, and the projective linear group $\operatorname {PGL}_2$ acts by $$ \begin{align*} \begin{pmatrix} a & b \\ c & d \end{pmatrix}\, \colon x_i \longmapsto \frac{a x_i + b}{c x_i + d} \end{align*} $$ for each $i = 1, \dots , n$ . The fixed field $L_n^{\operatorname {PGL}_2}$ is called “the field of cross-ratios”. Given a subgroup $S \subset \operatorname {\Sigma }_n$ , H. Tsunogai asked whether $L_n^S$ rational over $K_n^S$ . When $n \geqslant 5,$ the second author has shown that $L_n^S$ is rational over $K_n^S$ if and only if S has an orbit of odd order in $\{ 1, \dots , n \}$ . In this paper, we answer Tsunogai’s question for $n \leqslant 4$ .

Abstract In this paper, we classify conjugacy classes of centralizers of irreducible subgroups in {\mathrm{PGL}(n,\mathbb{C})} using alternate modules. When n is square-free, we prove that these conjugacy classes are classified by their isomorphism classes. More generally, we define a finite graph related to this classification whose combinatorial properties are expected to help describe the stratification of the bad locus of some character varieties.

Let [Formula: see text] be a field and [Formula: see text] a morphism. There is a natural conjugation action on the space of such morphisms by elements of the projective linear group [Formula: see text]. The group of automorphisms, or stabilizer group, of a given [Formula: see text] for this action is known to be a finite group. In this paper, we apply methods of invariant theory to automorphism groups by addressing two mainly computational problems. First, given a finite subgroup of [Formula: see text], determine endomorphisms of [Formula: see text] with that group as a subgroup of its automorphism group. In particular, we show that every finite subgroup occurs infinitely often and discuss some associated rationality problems. Inversely, given an endomorphism, determine its automorphism group. In particular, we extend the Faber–Manes–Viray fixed-point algorithm for [Formula: see text] to endomorphisms of [Formula: see text]. A key component is an explicit bound on the size of the automorphism group depending on the degree of the endomorphism.

AbstractWe show that the automorphism group of Drinfeld’s half-space over a finite field is the projective linear group of the underlying vector space. The proof of this result uses analytic geometry in the sense of Berkovich over the finite field equipped with the trivial valuation. We also take into account extensions of the base field.

AbstractLet Fq be a finite field with q elements, V an n-dimensional vector space over Fq and 𝒱 the projective space associated to V. Let G≤GLn(Fq) be a classical group and PG be the corresponding projective group. In this note we prove that if Fq (V )G is purely transcendental over Fq with homogeneous polynomial generators, then Fq (𝒱)PG is also purely transcendental over Fq. We compute explicitly the generators of Fq (𝒱)PG when G is the symplectic, unitary or orthogonal group.
