This work focuses on the proposal and the evaluation of a new consolidation system for prestressed reinforced concrete (PRC) beams of girder bridges. The system consists of two arch-shaped steel trusses placed alongside the lateral faces of the beam to beconsolidated. The arches develop longitudinally along the entire span of the beam and in elevation using the available height of the PRC cross section. The consolidation system is characterized by its own external constraints, independent from those serving the pre-existing element. The efficiency of the system with respect to parameters variability is described also focusing on the ratio between the load discharged by the consolidation system and the total applied load. Referring to a case study, the consolidation of a PRC beam is presented adopting the proposed system with respect to the usually adopted external prestressing technique. The cross sections properties of the steel arch shaped trusses are defined by means of a structural optimization process using a genetic algorithm, identifying the minimum steel consumption. Finally, a preliminary cost-benefit analysis is performed for the proposed solution for a comparison with other commonly adopted techniques.

AbstractAt 6:05 PM on 1 August 2007, the I-35 W Highway Bridge crossing the Mississippi River in Minneapolis, Minnesota, collapsed due to the failure of crucial parts of the bridge’s steel truss structure. Thirteen people died in the disaster, 145 were injured. A report of United States National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) revealed that the Minnesota Department of Transport, over a long period of time, had ignored available information about the structurally deficient status of the bridge in anticipation of ‘budget busting’ repair costs. Which resulted in a preference for less expensive patch-up measures to improve the drivability of the bridge rather than a retrofit of the fracture-critical components of the steel truss whose failure triggered the disaster of 1 August 2007.

The dynamic characteristics are closely linked to the seismic stability and wind-resistant of the bridge. But different bridge types have different dynamic characteristics. In order to study the dynamic characteristics of a double-pylon cable-stayed bridge with a single-cable plane and steel truss girder whose main span is the longest in the world, the dynamic load test was done, and the finite element and the subspace iteration methods were used to analyze the vibration mode of the bridge. The influence of different structural parameters on the dynamic characteristics of the bridge was analyzed. The changed structural parameters are cable layout, stiffness of steel truss girder, stiffness of stayed cables, stiffness of pylons, the concentration of dead load, number and location of auxiliary piers, and structural system. The results show that the bending and torsion resistance of the double-pylon cable-stayed bridge with a single-cable plane and steel truss girder is weak. The torsional stiffness of the cable-stayed bridge with a double-cable plane is stronger than that of the cable-stayed bridge with a single-cable plane. The seismic stability and wind-resistant of the bridge can be improved by using light dead load, improving the stiffness of pylon and girder, and adding auxiliary piers scientifically. However, the change of cable stiffness has a complex influence on the dynamic characteristics of the bridge. The conclusion can offer references for the construction, maintenance, and design of the same type of bridges.
