Abstract Dynamic programming (DP) is one of the most classical methods adopted for reservoir operation. It reduces the computational efforts of complex high-dimensional problems by piecewise dimensionality reduction and provides the global optimums of the problems, but it suffers the “curse of dimensionality”. Progressive optimality algorithm (POA) has been used repeatedly in reservoir operation studies during last decades because it alleviates the “curse of dimensionality” of DP and has good convergence and extensive applicability. Nonetheless, POA encounters two difficulties in multi-reservoir operation applications. One is the transfer interrupt problem that makes the search procedure hard to achieve free allocation of water between two nonadjacent stages, and the latter is the dimensionality problem that leads to a low convergence rate. In order to overcome these deficiencies, this paper makes some enhancements to POA and proposes a hybrid approach combining the enhanced POA and DP (EPOA-DP) for long-term operation of cascade reservoir systems. In EPOA-DP, EPOA is employed to improve the quality of the solutions and DP is used to reduce the computational effort of the two-stage problem solution. The proposed approach was tested using a real world four-reservoir cascade system and a ten-reservoir benchmark test example, and the results demonstrate that it outperforms POA both in computational time and quality of the solution.

The integration of large-scale wind and solar power into the power grid brings new challenges to the security and stability of power systems because of the uncertainty and intermittence of wind and solar power. This sensitive expected output has real implications for short-term hydro scheduling (STHS), which provides reserve services to alleviate electrical perturbations from wind and solar power. This paper places an emphasis on the sensitive expected output characteristics of hydro plants and their effect on reserve services. The multi-step progressive optimality algorithm (MSPOA) is used for the STHS problem. An iterative approximation method is proposed to determine the forebay level and output under the condition of the sensitive expected output. Cascaded hydro plants in the Wujiang River are selected as an example. The results illustrate that the method can achieve good performance for peak shaving and reserve services. The proposed approach is both accurate and computationally acceptable so that the obtained hydropower schedules are in accordance with practical circumstances and the reserve can cope with renewable power fluctuations effectively.

Apart from traditional optimization techniques, e.g. progressive optimality algorithm (POA), modern intelligence algorithms, like genetic algorithms, differential evolution have been widely used to solve optimization problems. This paper deals with comparative analysis of POA, GA and DE and their applications in a reservoir operation problem. The results show that both GA and DES are feasible to reservoir operation optimization, but they display different features. GA and DE have many parameters and are difficult in determination of these parameter values. For simple problems with mall number of decision variables, GA and DE are better than POA when adopting appropriate parameter values and constraint handling methods. But for complex problem with large number of variables, POA combined with simplex method are much superior to GA and DE in time-assuming and quality of optimal solutions. This study helps to select proper optimization algorithms and parameter values in reservoir operation.
