We show that if [Formula: see text] is an irrational number in [Formula: see text], [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text] are in [Formula: see text] [Formula: see text] is a matrix of infinite order in SL[Formula: see text], either tr[Formula: see text] or tr[Formula: see text] and the greatest common divisor of the entries in [Formula: see text] is one, then for any [Formula: see text] there exists [Formula: see text] satisfying the following: For any unital simple separable [Formula: see text]-algebra [Formula: see text] with tracial rank at most one, any three unitaries [Formula: see text] in [Formula: see text], if [Formula: see text] satisfy certain trace conditions and [Formula: see text] then there exists a triple of unitaries [Formula: see text] in [Formula: see text] such that [Formula: see text] [Formula: see text]

Abstract Let $\Theta =(\theta _{j,k})_{3\times 3}$ be a nondegenerate real skew-symmetric $3\times 3$ matrix, where $\theta _{j,k}\in [0,1).$ For any $\varepsilon>0$ , we prove that there exists $\delta>0$ satisfying the following: if $v_1,v_2,v_3$ are three unitaries in any unital simple separable $C^*$ -algebra A with tracial rank at most one, such that $\begin{align*}\|v_kv_j-e^{2\pi i \theta_{j,k}}v_jv_k\|<\delta \,\,\,\, \mbox{and}\,\,\,\, \frac{1}{2\pi i}\tau(\log_{\theta}(v_kv_jv_k^*v_j^*))=\theta_{j,k}\end{align*}$ for all $\tau \in T(A)$ and $j,k=1,2,3,$ where $\log _{\theta }$ is a continuous branch of logarithm (see Definition 4.13) for some real number $\theta \in [0, 1)$ , then there exists a triple of unitaries $\tilde {v}_1,\tilde {v}_2,\tilde {v}_3\in A$ such that $\begin{align*}\tilde{v}_k\tilde{v}_j=e^{2\pi i\theta_{j,k} }\tilde{v}_j\tilde{v}_k\,\,\,\,\mbox{and}\,\,\,\,\|\tilde{v}_j-v_j\|<\varepsilon,\,\,j,k=1,2,3.\end{align*}$ The same conclusion holds if $\Theta $ is rational or nondegenerate and A is a nuclear purely infinite simple $C^*$ -algebra (where the trace condition is vacuous). If $\Theta $ is degenerate and A has tracial rank at most one or is nuclear purely infinite simple, we provide some additional injectivity conditions to get the above conclusion.

Let [Formula: see text] be a unital simple ring. Under a mild technical restriction on [Formula: see text], we characterize bilinear mappings [Formula: see text] satisfying [Formula: see text], and [Formula: see text] for all unit [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text], where [Formula: see text]. As an application we describe bijective linear maps [Formula: see text] satisfying [Formula: see text] for all invertible [Formula: see text]. Precisely, we will show that [Formula: see text] is an isomorphism.

AbstractThis note corrects an error in our paper “A Galois correspondence for reduced crossed products of unital simple $\text{C}^{\ast }$-algebras by discrete groups”, http://dx.doi.org/10.4153/CJM-2018-014-6. The main results of the original paper are unchanged.

AbstractLet a discrete group $G$ act on a unital simple $\text{C}^{\ast }$-algebra $A$ by outer automorphisms. We establish a Galois correspondence $H\mapsto A\rtimes _{\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FC},r}H$ between subgroups of $G$ and $\text{C}^{\ast }$-algebras $B$ satisfying $A\subseteq B\subseteq A\rtimes _{\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FC},r}G$, where $A\rtimes _{\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FC},r}G$ denotes the reduced crossed product. For a twisted dynamical system $(A,G,\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FC},\unicode[STIX]{x1D70E})$, we also prove the corresponding result for the reduced twisted crossed product $A\rtimes _{\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FC},r}^{\unicode[STIX]{x1D70E}}G$.

We show that if $A$ is a simple Villadsen algebra of either the first type with seed space a finite dimensional CW complex, or of the second type, then $A$ absorbs the Jiang-Su algebra tensorially if and only if the central sequence algebra of $A$ does not admit characters.Additionally, in a joint appendix with Joan Bosa (see the following paper), we show that the Villadsen algebra of the second type with infinite stable rank fails the Corona Factorization Property, thus providing the first example of a unital, simple, separable and nuclear $C^\ast $-algebra with a unique tracial state which fails to have this property.

Let U be a unital *-algebra and ? : U ? U be a linear map behaving like a derivation or an anti-derivation at the following orthogonality conditions on elements of U: xy = 0, xy* = 0, xy = yx = 0 and xy* = y*x = 0. We characterize the map ? when U is a zero product determined algebra. Special characterizations are obtained when our results are applied to properly infinite W*-algebras and unital simple C*-algebras with a non-trivial idempotent.

Abstract Given any finitely aligned higher-rank graph Λ and any unital commutative ring R, the Kumjian–Pask algebra {\mathrm{KP}_{R}(\Lambda)} is known as the higher-rank generalization of Leavitt path algebras. After the characterization of simple Kumjian–Pask algebras by Clark and Pangalela among others, in this article we focus on the purely infinite simple ones. Briefly, we show that if {\mathrm{KP}_{R}(\Lambda)} is simple and every vertex of Λ is reached from a generalized cycle with an entrance, then {\mathrm{KP}_{R}(\Lambda)} is purely infinite. We also prove a dichotomy for simple Kumjian–Pask algebras: If each vertex of Λ is reached only from finitely many vertices and {\mathrm{KP}_{R}(\Lambda)} is simple, then {\mathrm{KP}_{R}(\Lambda)} is either purely infinite or locally matritial. This result covers all unital simple Kumjian–Pask algebras.

Let [Formula: see text] be a general unital AH-algebra and let [Formula: see text] be a unital simple [Formula: see text]-algebra with tracial rank at most one. Suppose that [Formula: see text] are two unital monomorphisms. We show that [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text] are approximately unitarily equivalent if and only if [Formula: see text] [Formula: see text] [Formula: see text] where [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text] are continuous affine maps from tracial state space [Formula: see text] of [Formula: see text] to faithful tracial state space [Formula: see text] of [Formula: see text] induced by [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text], respectively, and [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text] are induced homomorphisms s from [Formula: see text] into [Formula: see text], where [Formula: see text] is the space of all real affine continuous functions on [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text] is the closure of the image of [Formula: see text] in the affine space [Formula: see text]. In particular, the above holds for [Formula: see text], the algebra of continuous functions on a compact metric space. An approximate version of this is also obtained. We also show that, given a triple of compatible elements [Formula: see text], an affine map [Formula: see text] and a homomorphisms [Formula: see text], there exists a unital monomorphism [Formula: see text] such that [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text].
