This paper introduced the design of a portable ultrasonic TOFD imaging and detecting system, and developed the hardware and application software based on embedded system. We accomplished multi-channel ultrasonic transmission and acquisition, real time A-scan signal or TOFD image display, ultrasonic data storage and analysis of large capacity and automatic quantitative calculation of cracks in this system. This system offered rapid speed and high accuracy that could be used to locate and size cracks in both weld joint detection and field structure examination.

In the application of the TOFD inspection method, the analysis of test results is the focus and aporia of the study. TOFD image analysis include: analysis of defect size, location analysis and defect map features. In order to increase people's understanding of the TOFD technique, given butt joint welds TOFD and RT detect. The paper introduces basic process of defect using the TOFD method, describes method of quantitative orientation of the defect in detail, analyzes the localization and quantification of defects in detection. Determine the qualitative of defects by Ray photographs and analyze the characteristics of the defects of this nature in the TOFD image.

TOFD (Time of flight diffraction) is suitable for the weld defects in the detection and has been widely used in the vessel of pressure. To widen the range of detection in TOFD and the removal of the background wave, a new lateral wave suppression method for TOFD image is proposed. Firstly, ultrasound TOFT image signal of the model is established. Secondly, a new searching clustering algorithm is proposed. Then, it is used to lateral wave suppression. The results show that the lateral wave can be eliminated effectively even if lateral waves are shaking seriously.
