The Implications of Gender Stereotyping on the Selection of Majors among Lebanese University Students

A total of 182 university students completed a questionnaire concerned with the rating Of majors on a feminine-masculine scale. Significant differences were found between male and female student mean ratings of the feminine-masculine scale for two majors: engineering and political sciences in the masculine direc- tion. No significant difference was found on the aggregate score of feminine- masculine scale for the 18 majors. The type of school attended either mixed or single-sexed did not show any relation to the response on the masculine-femi- nine scale. Main effects were found between ranking place of residence for the selection of majors on the mean ratings of the feminine-masculine scale. Also, regression analysis showed that mean parental influence was the main predictor on the mean feminine-masculine ratings. These results overshadow male-female differences of gender stereotyping; hence, a function of a wider cluster of attributes offamily influence, shortage of guidance, and individual awareness of university programs the sample was taken from.

Genoa, the old Italian crusading port, is the hometown of Deronda from which he will set out on his Zionist quest to liberate Palestine. Genoa in George Eliot's Daniel Deronda is a place of revelation and judgement. Through the his- tory and traditions of the city, the major events and themes of the book are uni- fied. Perhaps Eliot was refering to this vast web of metaphor and allusion that she has spun around the old city when she asserted that she •meant "everything in the book to be related to everything else there. " Only the reputation of Genoa is rather tarnished, and the associations Eliot makes between the city and the characters in the novel are basically negative. By relating Gneoa so closely to Daniel and his quest, the novelist cannot be very positive about the Zionist aspi- rations of the characters in the novel.

The Turkish Conquest of Anatolia in the Eleventh Century

The article describes the Turkish conquest of Anatolia in the second half of the eleventh century. An evaluation of the sources (almost all Greek) and a sum- mary of the successful Byzantine defence against the Arabs is followed by a detailed account of the principal stages of the Turkish conquest. The inadequacy of the sources, which become less and less informative as the conquest pro- ceeded, means that the final and most important stage of the Turkish advance, from 1081—85, must be conjectured. Nevertheless, the general outline of the con- quest is suffciently clear. The article concludes by identifying one of the main causes Of the debacle: the failure of imperial governments from Basil II (976—1025) to grasp the importance of defending Anatolia, as evidenced by the shift of byzantine interests to the Balkans.

De la concurrence dans les systèmes, quelques aspects de l’arabe moderne

Les langues sont instables en raison des conflits internes dans leurs sys- tèmes. L'arabe, langue très conservatrice, n'échappe pas à cette loi. Les exemples puisés dans l'œuvre de romanciers et de nouvellistes arabes montrent bien un appauvrissement du système dans les textes arabes modernes, un appauvrissement qui se traduit par la réduction du nombre des pièces du sys- tème, par une atténuation très claire des valeurs distinctives. La contrepartie de cet appauvrissement sera, inévitablement, un recours, de plus en plus grand, aux valeurs contextuelles, aux valeurs référentielles, à notre connaissance du monde.

II con- stitue une phase importante et mûre dans la promotion de l' arabe dialectal par la production littéraire. Par le recours à l' allégorie d'un vieux chien méditant sur la vie, la jeunesse et la mort, le texte d' Al—Khal s'enrichit de multiples possibilités tout en gardant un brin de gaieté dans ses plus tristes épisodes.
