Kin Networks and Family Strategies: Working Class Portuguese Families in New England11Research for this chapter was conducted for a project on “Women, Work, and Ethnicity in an Urban Setting,” funded by the Center for the Study of Metropolitan Studies, National Institute of Mental Health, Grant No. RO–1–MH 27363. Interviews with nine of the Azorean families were conducted by Filomena Silva and John Sousa. They were also responsible for translating the tapes from the Portuguese and writing up the interviews in summary form. As indicated by the use of “I” throughout, Louise Lamphere was responsible for the interpretation of these data and their presentation in this paper.
