Gender and the Role of Emotional Regulation in Intercultural Communication

This article addresses the question as to why female migrants are more negatively affected than male migrants when confronted with unfamiliar traits in communication in the host country, but they are nevertheless more willing to adapt to the foreign style of communication. To answer this question, the different management of emotional regulation (Thayer et al. 2003) by both genders was investigated. A broad survey conducted among Spanish migrants in Germany led to the conclusion that the female migrants actually perceive the investigated traits more frequently and are also more negatively affected by them. But, in comparison to the males, they have an increased ability to recognize and understand their emotions although they also display an increased tendency to ruminate. However, most of the women counteracted this tendency with a heightened ability to regulate their emotions through antirumination emotional repair strategies. According to the data, this abilityseems to lead to a greater willingness to understand the views of the natives and thus possibly to being more disposed to integrate into the host society.

Las pruebas de ciudadanía y naturalización existen desde hace más de un siglo. Conocer su justificación y su importancia internacional implica su propia revisión. Este artículo comienza por definir sus principales características, centrándose en sus dos componentes principales: lengua y cultura. La diferencia en los niveles de competencia en el Marco de Referencia Común Europeo es especialmente relevante. Inmediatamente después, miramos los diferentes exámenes en diferentes países. Una parte importante del trabajo está dirigida al uso de la tecnología en la evaluación y preparación de exámenes enfatizando sus beneficios y dificultades. Adicionalmente, el trabajo también destaca la oportunidad en este momento para su implementación en la red a pesar de los problemas académicos y sociales actuales.

Oral production skills and pronunciation improvement in MOOCs for migrants and refugees: an unavoidable challenge

This article is focused on the challenges posed by the development of oral production skills (speaking, pronunciation) in a Massive Open Online Course (MOOC), a resource that is totally conditioned by the technologies and has very limited posibilities for individual adaptation. First of all, the difficulties that this goal poses are reviewed and confronted with some successful precedents that show how to deal with those challenges. Next, we present a case study in which some strategies and resources have been used to develop oral skills and improve pronunciation in technologically mediated environments, an Spanish L-MOOC for migrants and refugees, absolute beginners, developed at UNED (Spain).

En este artículo se presentan los resultados del análisis parcial de un conjunto de datos recientemente recabados para conocer el perfil de los migrantes y refugiados (MR en adelante) en España. Estos datos son un subconjunto de las respuestas obtenidas mediante un cuestionario distribuido entre una amplia representación de responsables de ONG y asociaciones que trabajan con este colectivo en la Comunidad de Madrid. En concreto, las respuestas del cuestionario analizadas valoran el perfil académico, profesional y tecnológico de los MR en nuestro país. Este estudio forma parte de otro más amplio, destinado al desarrollo y adaptado a las necesidades de los MR, de cursos masivos en línea y abiertos (o MOOC, por sus siglas en inglés) para el aprendizaje del español, principalmente. En este contexto, el fin concreto de este estudio ha sido determinar qué requisitos debían cumplir estos MOOC y sus contenidos adaptados, desde un punto de vista tecnológico y formativo.

Metáforas, representación discursiva y migración venezolana en el Perú: hacia un análisis crítico-cognitivo del discurso de la prensa escrita peruana

En el marco de la corriente teórica denominada Lingüística Cognitiva, desarrollamos un análisis crítico-cognitivo del discurso sobre cómo la prensa escrita nacional representa, discursivamente, la migración venezolana en el Perú. Específicamente, analizamos las metáforas involucradas con una serie de ideologías en relación conesta población extranjera, recientemente asentada en dicho país. Los discursos analizados evidencian creencias colectivas en las que estos grupos minoritarios constituyen una amenaza para la población local en dos sentidos. En primer lugar, la conceptualización del territorio como recipiente, entre otras metáforas, supone un riesgo en el que el migrante empieza a saturar espacios geográficos. En segundo lugar, la conceptualización del migrante como un organismo insalubre, entre otras metáforas, implica también una amenaza, pero ya noal territorio, sino a sus habitantes. A partir de estos mecanismos metafóricos, entre otros, la prensa peruana (re)crea una serie de imágenes negativas en torno a estos migrantes.

Language in the Americas: Out of Beringia

Linguistically, the Western Hemisphere harbors a great typologicaldiversity, by some estimates, the greatest in the world. Controversyregarding classification aside, much work lies ahead to identify themovements up through to include the final leg of the journey ofmodern humans, in terms of distance travelled from our continent oforigin, to Tierra del Fuego. This article will briefly summarize theadvances that the language sciences have made in describing thesemigrations and the languages that accompanied them, to then discussviable proposals for collaboration with other fields. Such an interdisciplinaryprogram of study is necessary because the tools of linguisticsdo not suffice. Continuing work on the processes of origin, dispersionand convergence will help us better understand fundamentalproperties of language. Research on the description of individuallanguages and how they can be classified will contribute to thisunderstanding. For speakers and students of the American languages,these advances will also contribute to the recovery of the culturalheritage that is associated with historical language change.

Venezuelan migrants in Spain

Venezuela is experiencing an unprecedented exodus as a result of ongoing political, economic and humanitarian crises. While the majority of emigrants remain in neighbouring Latin American countries, the US and Europe are also among the preferred destinations. The way migrants are covered in the media shapes public opinion and has an impact on their integration into society. Therefore, the aim of this paper is to examine the coverage of Venezuelan migrants in the Spanish press in a timeframe from 2015 to 2020. For this purpose, a linguistic discourse analysis is conducted. The results contrast with the current state of research. With the help of the sociological "othering"-theory and the concept of the so-called "aporofobia", it is possible to explain how the image of good (and "bad") migrants is discursively constructed.

En este artículo se presentan los resultados del análisis parcial de un conjunto de datos recientemente recabado para conocer el perfil de los migrantes y refugiados (MR en adelante) en España. Los datos analizados incluyen: (a) los propios de ONG y asociaciones que trabajan con este colectivo en la Comunidad de Madrid; y (b) algunas de las respuestas obtenidas a un cuestionario distribuido entre las personas responsables de dichas asociaciones. Estas respuestas del cuestionario han permitido delinear el perfil identificativo y sociolingüístico de los MR en nuestro país. Este estudio se complementa con otro presentado en este mismo volumen, y cuyo fin último conjunto ha sido realizar un análisis de necesidades de formación lingüística de las MR en España, de cara al posible desarrollo de cursos masivos en línea y abiertos (o MOOC, por sus siglas en inglés) para un aprendizaje del español y/o de otras lenguas de alta demanda (inglés, francés, etc.) convenientemente adaptado a las mismas.

Metonymies, Immigration and the Press: From Ilegales to Guiris

The current paper explores the Lexical and Conceptual Metonymies employed by the Spanish press to refer to immigrants from cognitive and critical discourse perspectives. Two corpora of news stories are analyzed: the first contains news stories from the Comunidad de Madrid, whereas the second is contextualized and geolocalized in a particular area of Madrid, Lavapiés, where several studies have revealed a tendency to use the diversity present in this territory as a marketing strategy. The analysis brings to light differences and similarities in the underlying metonymical discourse of each corpus, namely in terms of the distribution of the Conceptual Metonymies found therein, as well as their correlation with a positive, neutral or negative assessment of the given news story. The metonymical discourse of the first corpus correlates most strongly with neutral assessments, while that of the second corpus correlates largely with positive assessments of the conceptualizations.

Una aproximación a la segunda generación de inmigrantes árabes en Occidente desde la LIJ: el caso de Does my head look big in this? y su traducción al árabe

El estudio se enmarca dentro de los estudios de traducción centrados en la representación del fenómeno migratorio en la literatura infantil y juvenil (LIJ) y tiene por objeto analizar Does my head look big in this?, novela en la que la escritora australiana de origen palestino-egipcio Randa Abdel-Fattah explora la identidad de la segunda generación de inmigrantes árabes en Australia. En primer lugar, se describe la configuración de la identidad de los hijos de familias inmigradas y su relación con la sociedad australiana y las de origen. En segundo lugar, se analiza el uso de la censura en la traducción al árabe y el modo en que esta técnica de traducción ha condicionado el trasvase de dicha configuración.
