Putting out of using large areas of agricultural lands in the central region over the past years has led to worsening the prospects of their purposed use, although the problem of the relevance of their restoration still remains. For many years the unused land was exposed to both natural exogenous processes such as erosion, suffusion, etc. and biological and chemical changes, usually for the worse for agriculture. There are considered elements of monitoring aimed at assessing the prospects or lack of perspectives of rehabilitation of degraded lands. An energy approach to assessing the state of slopes and soils located within these slopes is presented. The main factors of natural and anthropogenic character in assessing the prospects for land restoration are their steepness, excess relative to local bases of erosion other morphological characteristics of slopes which in general is reduced to an assessment of the energy provision of slopes and soils. So the higher the energy capacity of slopes – they are less promising for development, for soils – there is a reverse picture – the higher their energy reserves, the more promising is their use. Approaches to zoning the territory for monitoring from larger taxons of natural and anthropogenic genesis to the sites of special surveillance within which the prospects for rehabilitation of the agricultural land are evaluated. The most important factor is the material expediency of such actions, i.e. before starting the restoration work it is necessary to assess the profitability or loss of the proposed event. In cases of the material expediency it is feasible as further actions to include energy assessments of slopes and soils; zoning of the object according to the steepness and oriented characteristics of soil washout; and the possibility of obtaining agronomic and meteorological data on a timely basis. The result of the work is a forecast assessment of the prospects for restoring degraded land for the intended purpose using modern databases and WEB-systems.

The major agroforestry practices observed in the leasehold forests were silvopasture, hortisilviculture and Non Timber Forest Product (NTFP) cultivation. The most prominent problem to the users in adopting agroforestry practices was the lack of technical information. Some successful insights observed suggest that agroforestry has a notable potential to address dual objectives of poverty alleviation and conservation. The need to evolve sustainable mechanism for promoting agrofrorestry in degraded lands through the dissemination of useful traditional knowledge, innovative practices and improved technologies was identified. <p>An integrative interdisciplinary approach is currently developed to investigate groundwater systems in alpine and prealpine environments and how they respond to hydrological extremes such as droughts, heavy rain and floods in terms of water quantity, hydrochemical quality, and ecological status. The new approach is aimed at improving the understanding of the interaction between physical, chemical, and biological processes in groundwater responses to extreme events as well as developing indicators suitable for an integrative monitoring and management of the aquifers. For this purpose, observation wells of the existing state hydrographic monitoring net have been selected within the Austrian part of the Mur river basin, stretching from the alpine origin to the national border in the foreland. The investigation area thus comprises diverse hydrogeological settings and land-use types. The selected observation wells have long-term records of groundwater levels and are used for sampling campaigns under different hydrological conditions. Groundwater level fluctuations are evaluated using drought indices and statistical approaches, such as auto-correlation and cross-correlation with precipitation and stream stages. Our hydrochemical analyses of groundwater and surface waters also consider compounds indicative of agricultural sources (e.g., nitrate), wastewater-borne micro-pollutants, and stable isotopes of water. These indicators are used to identify different drivers controlling water origin and quality. The ecological status is characterized using microbiological measures, such as total number of bacteria and microbial activity, groundwater fauna, and the qualitative composition of dissolved organic matter (DOM). First results demonstrate a deterioration of water quality from groundwater to surface water and from the alpine region towards the foreland, corresponding to the more intense agricultural and urban land use in the foreland. Linkages between water quality and hydrological conditions are currently being evaluated and will be further examined using UV-Vis spectrometry for high-resolution in-situ monitoring of water quality changes (DOM and nitrate) at selected observation wells.</p>

<p>Understanding the dynamics of plant populations and their relationship with the characteristics of the terrain (slope, texture, etc.) and with particular phenomena (erosion, pollution, environmental constrains, etc.) that could affect them is crucial in order to manage regeneration and rehabilitation projects in degraded lands. In recent years, the emphasis has been placed on the observation and assessment of microtopographic drivers as they lead to large-scale phenomena. All the ecological variables that affect a given area are interconnected and the success in unraveling the ecological patterns of operation relies on making a good characterization of all the parameters involved.</p><p>It is especially interesting to study the natural colonization processes that take place in Mediterranean areas with a high degree of seasonality, to whose climatic restrictions, the presence of pollutants and various anthropic actions, can be added. Over these degraded areas, we propose using a new tool, what we have come to call "<strong>pictorial transects</strong>", that is, one-dimensional artificial transects built from low-scale photographs (2 m<sup>2</sup>) taken along a line of work (transect) where you can see the points where ecological resources are generated, stored and lost, and their fluctuation throughout time. A derivative of these would be the "<strong>green transects</strong>" in which the green color has been discriminated using the open software Image I. It is an inexpensive, fast and straightforward pictorial method that can be used to research and monitor the spatial and temporal fluctuation of the potential input of resources (organic matter, water, fine particles, etc.) to the ecosystem.</p><p>The information obtained from pictorial transects not only refers to the measurement of the photosynthetic potential per unit area or the location of the critical points (generate, storage or sink of resources) but also makes it possible to monitor the specific composition of the plant cover. For an appropriate use of this methodology, the criteria to determine the direction and length of the different transects must be previously and carefully established according to the objectives proposed in the study. For example: a radial transect in a salty pond will give us information on the changes in the plant cover as we move away from the center and the salinity decreases. In the same pond, a transect parallel to the shore will give us information on those changes that occur in the vegetation that do not depend on the degree of salinity. There are some cases in which this method could be very useful, as in the natural colonization of a degraded mine site or to assess the progression area affected by allochthonous species or weeds in extensive crops.</p>
