In order to develop reliable methods for the synthesis of various 5-substituted-8-oxyquinoline derivatives for the preparation of Alq3-type complexes, we have improved the reaction conditions on some syntheses described in the literature, successfully synthesized new ligands based on quinolin-8-ol and characterized their chemical structures by NMR. Some of the synthesized quinolin-8-ol derivatives containing incorporated bulky triphenyl or tert-butyl groups showed blue luminescence in the solid state due to the possible aggregation induced emission enhancement (AIEE) with a maximum wavelength around 510 nm. More detailed light-emission property investigation of the mentioned bulky group containing compounds is currently underway.

Herein we report a novel chiral bismacrocycle with unexpected dual emission and tunable aggregation-induced emission colors. A facile four-step synthesis strategy is developed to construct this rigid bismacrocycle, (1,4)[8]cycloparaphenylenophane (SCPP[8]), which possesses a 1,2,4,5-tetraphenylbenzene core locked by two intersecting polyphenylene-based macrocycles. The luminescent behavior of SCPP[8] shows the unique characteristics of both aggregation-caused quenching effect and aggrega-tion-induced emission (AIE) effect, inducing remarkable redshift emission including near white-light emission. SCPP[8] is configurationally stable and possesses a novel shape-persistent bismacrocycle scaffold with a high strain energy (up to 127.83 kcal/mol). In addition, SCPP[8] displays enhanced circularly polarized luminescence properties due to AIE effect.

Triboluminescence (TL) is a form of light emission induced upon mechanical forces on the material. However, our understanding of this phenomenon is still unclear and more examples are therefore needed in order to elucidate its mechanism. In this work, two types of TL complexes, [Eu(pp-dbm-Cl2)3phen] and [Eu(mm-dbm-Cl2)3phen], which also displays aggregation-induced emission (AIE) were synthesized and investigated for its photo-physical and crystal structural properties. These complexes were crystallized in a centro-symmetric space group P21/n, and remarkably, displayed TL upon grinding that may be due to the presence of extensive π···π, C-H···π and C-H···Cl-C interactions in the close molecular packing of its structure. This rare example deviates from the widely accepted mechanism of TL, hence widening the scope of our understanding in the area.
