Herein we report a novel chiral bismacrocycle with unexpected dual emission and tunable aggregation-induced emission colors. A facile four-step synthesis strategy is developed to construct this rigid bismacrocycle, (1,4)[8]cycloparaphenylenophane (SCPP[8]), which possesses a 1,2,4,5-tetraphenylbenzene core locked by two intersecting polyphenylene-based macrocycles. The luminescent behavior of SCPP[8] shows the unique characteristics of both aggregation-caused quenching effect and aggrega-tion-induced emission (AIE) effect, inducing remarkable redshift emission including near white-light emission. SCPP[8] is configurationally stable and possesses a novel shape-persistent bismacrocycle scaffold with a high strain energy (up to 127.83 kcal/mol). In addition, SCPP[8] displays enhanced circularly polarized luminescence properties due to AIE effect.

Mechanochromic luminescent dyes change their luminescence color upon exposure to external mechanical stimuli. In this study, we synthesized a liquid crystalline mechanochromic luminescent dye containing a terminal cholesterol molecule. The dissolution of the dye in 1,4-dioxane resulted in the formation of a gel. The luminescence of the xerogel obtained from the dioxane solution changed from green to blue upon grinding, indicating mechanochromic luminescence behavior. The anisotropic patterning of short-wavelength-shifted luminescence color change by directional handwriting on surface layer of liquid crystal was successfully demonstrated. Furthermore, blue-shifting mechanoresponsive polymer composite surface was fabricated by using the luminophore.

The use of divergent 4,2’:6’,4”- and 3,2’:6’,3”-terpyridine ligands as linkers and/or nodes in extended coordination assemblies has gained in popularity over the last decade. However, there is also a range of coordination polymers which feature 2,2’:6’,2”-terpyridine metal-binding domains. Of the remaining 45 isomers of terpyridine, few have been utilized in extended coordination arrays. Here, we provide an overview of coordination polymers and networks containing isomers of terpyridine and either zinc(II) and cadmium(II). Although the motivation for investigations of many of these systems is their luminescent behavior, we have chosen to focus mainly on structural details, and we assess to what extent assemblies are reproducible. We also consider cases where there is structural evidence for competitive product formation. A point that emerges is the lack of systematic investigations.

We present a brief review of some important conceptual and practical aspects for the design and properties of molecular luminescent gelators and their gels. Topics considered include structural and dynamic aspects of the gels, including factors important to their ability to emit radiation from electronically excited states.
