Our prosperity and sustainability in the future depends on the ability to innovate. Therefore, innovation needs to be embedded in all sections of an economy. A research study took place in a higher education setting of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) on offering an entrepreneurship major to local women students. The aim was to explore the interest and views of these Generation Z students on driving innovation and entrepreneurship in the country through building homegrown companies. This research is highly relevant as the society re-imagines itself post pandemic. The findings from the research may be useful to members of academia, professionals related to this sector, and policy makers of nations. They may use the information to design suitable academic programs for women that may help drive entrepreneurship, innovation, and sustainability for every strata of the society in the post-COVID-19 era.

Many cities in the world define themselves as ‘smart.' Is this term appropriate for cities in the emergent Gulf region? This article investigates seven Gulf cities (Kuwait City, Manama, Doha, Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah, and Muscat) that have once grown rich due to large reserves of oil and gas. Now, with the threat of ending resources, governments focus on the development towards a knowledge society. The authors analyzed the cities in terms of their ‘smartness' or ‘informativeness' by a quantitative survey and by in-depth qualitative interviews (N = 34). Especially Doha in Qatar is well on its way towards an informational city, but also Dubai and Sharjah (both in the United Arab Emirates) make good scores.

In the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and other surrounding Gulf Arab nations an increasing number of males are opting out of higher education. In the UAE less than 30% of students attending public higher education institutions are male. Little however is known about why some males choose to continue their education and others do not. This policy paper, which is drawn from the first part of a study on understanding male enrolment patterns in the UAE, looks at a sample of males who have continued on to higher education. The paper begins with an overview of higher education in the UAE. It then looks at the factors influencing the participation and persistence of males in general. Next it outlines the study from which the data presented was taken, taking a closer look at the characteristics of males who have continued to higher education, including the roles of parents, schools and friends. Finally, the paper concludes by discussing the challenges facing males who choose to continue their education and how these might be dealt with in the future
