This report presents a set of maps of regional fluvial sediment yield in Canada, based mainly on the Water Survey of Canada archive of riverine suspended sediment observations. Regional scaling relations for the variation of suspended sediment load with drainage basin area are established to permit data to be adjusted to common areal bases for portrayal of regional variations. For most regions, the specific sediment yield increases downstream, indicating regional degradation of river valleys. In the southern prairies, however, regional aggradation is occurring, and in southern Ontario similar quantities of fluvial sediment are apparently being yielded, on average, over all scales in the landscape. A smoothed regional portrayal of the results is obtained by kriging, which also yields error estimates for locally predicted values of sediment yield. Maps are presented for the standard areas of 1 km2, 102 km2 (10 km × 10 km), and 104 km2 (102 km × 102 km).

Suspended sediment data for Southern Ontario stream have been analyzed with regard to areal and temporal patterns, characteristics of sediment concentrations, and relationships between sediment loads and watershed parameters. The range of annual suspended sediment yields for seven river basins is determined as 5250 to 175 000 kg/year/km2. The daily suspended loads exhibit highly skewed frequency distributions, with mean loads being equalled or exceeded less than 20% of the time and 50% of the annual load occurring during the months of March and April. It is demonstrated that sample loads collected during periods of low flow, and stream rankings determined from low flow data, are not indicative of the annual suspended sediment load picture. No simple model between suspended loads and such basin indices as relief ratio and drainage density is found to be satisfactory for prediction purposes.

Formal articulation test responses are often used by the busy clinician as a basis for planning intervention goals. This article describes a 6-step procedure for using efficiently the single-word responses elicited with an articulation test. This procedure involves the assessment of all consonants within a word rather than only test-target consonants. Responses are organized within a Model and Replica chart to yield information about an individual's (a) articulation ability, (b) frequency of target attainment, substitutions, and deletions, (c) variability in production, and (d) phonological processes. This procedure is recommended as a preliminary assessment measure. It is advised that more detailed analysis of continuous speech be undertaken in conjunction with early treatment sessions.
