By considering the uncertainness of initial measuring position of encoders and signal sidebands caused by the fault gear pair, this paper presented a new comprehensive harmonic analysis method for the transmission error of gear hobbing machine. Based on that, a test platform was established, in which two circle grating encoders were connected to the hob spindle and workpiece spindle respectively. With the help of this new harmonic analysis method as well as the self-developed test platform, a new improved transmission error fault diagnosis method was developed for the gear hobbing machines. To verify its accountability, a case study was conducted on a YS-type gear hobbing machine. According to the spectrum amplitude comparison and the analysis of harmonic frequency distribution, the fault transmission gear pair was successfully located. This improved transmission error source tracing method was very helpful for quantifying both the manufacturing qualities and assembly qualities of parts and locating potential error source for new gear hobbing machines.

Chemical industrial parks, which act as critical infrastructures in many cities, need to be responsive to chemical gas leakage accidents. Once a chemical gas leakage accident occurs, risks of poisoning, fire, and explosion will follow. In order to meet the primary emergency response demands in chemical gas leakage accidents, source tracking technology of chemical gas leakage has been proposed and evolved. This paper proposes a novel method, Outlier Mutation Optimization (OMO) algorithm, aimed to quickly and accurately track the source of chemical gas leakage. The OMO algorithm introduces a random walk exploration mode and, based on Swarm Intelligence (SI), increases the probability of individual mutation. Compared with other optimization algorithms, the OMO algorithm has the advantages of a wider exploration range and more convergence modes. In the algorithm test session, a series of chemical gas leakage accident application examples with random parameters are first assumed based on the Gaussian plume model; next, the qualitative experiments and analysis of the OMO algorithm are conducted, based on the application example. The test results show that the OMO algorithm with default parameters has superior comprehensive performance, including the extremely high average calculation accuracy: the optimal value, which represents the error between the final objective function value obtained by the optimization algorithm and the ideal value, reaches 2.464e-15 when the number of sensors is 16; 2.356e-13 when the number of sensors is 9; and 5.694e-23 when the number of sensors is 4. There is a satisfactory calculation time: 12.743 s/50 times when the number of sensors is 16; 10.304 s/50 times when the number of sensors is 9; and 8.644 s/50 times when the number of sensors is 4. The analysis of the OMO algorithm’s characteristic parameters proves the flexibility and robustness of this method. In addition, compared with other algorithms, the OMO algorithm can obtain an excellent leakage source tracing result in the application examples of 16, 9 and 4 sensors, and the accuracy exceeds the direct search algorithm, evolutionary algorithm, and other swarm intelligence algorithms.

Garment buttons and other artefacts incorporating mother-of-pearl (nacre) are significant items of material culture frequently found on archaeological sites and in museum collections. From around 1860 until the end of the Second World War, Australia was the foremost international source of mother-of-pearl for buttons, which were mechanically mass produced during that time. Since nacre formation is impacted by climate, water chemistry and other environmental factors at the time of shell formation, mother-of-pearl is potentially well suited to geochemical investigations of provenance. And yet, this avenue of inquiry, and the impact of button manufacturing on the compositional nature of mother-of- pearl, have received little attention to date. This study comprised stable carbon (δ13C) and oxygen (δ18O) isotope analysis of six mother-of-pearl samples from at least four different species sourced from the major pearling areas of Australia. It found oxygen isotope to be an effective marker in discriminating between most sample source locations, although some regions were not distinguishable. Additional and much higher density sampling and analysis of modern pearl shell might resolve this issue. The study also determined that mechanical processing during button manufacture has no significant impact on the trace element and isotope compositions of the mother-of-pearl. In doing so, it demonstrates the potential for source tracing mother-of-pearl material culture items to shed new light on the history of the pearling industry in Australia, one of the country’s most historically important maritime industries.

Abstract. We describe the formulation of a simple method of water source tracing for computational models of flood inundation and demonstrate its implementation within CAESAR-Lisflood. Water source tracing can provide additional insight into flood dynamics by accounting for flow pathways. The method developed is independent of the hydraulic formulation used, allowing it to be implemented in other model codes without affecting flow routing. In addition, we developed a method which allows up to three water sources to be visualised in RGB colour-space, while continuing to allow depth to be resolved. We show the application of the methods developed for example applications of a major flood event, a shallow estuary, and Amazonian wetland inundation. A key advantage of the formulation developed is that the number of water sources which may be traced is limited only by computational considerations. In addition, the method is independent of the hydraulic formulation, meaning that it is relatively straightforward to add to existing finite volume codes including those based on or developed around the LISFLOOD-FP method.

PurposeFrancois Quesnay, known as the “Confucius of Europe”, was profoundly influenced by traditional Chinese culture to form his thoughts, which contained strong Chinese characteristics. This paper aims to examine economic thought of Francois Quesnay from the perspective of the construction of socialist political economics with Chinese characteristics.Design/methodology/approachMoreover, his thoughts also profoundly influenced subsequent economists, such as Adam Smith and Karl Marx. It can be said that Francois Quesnay was at the intersection of Chinese, Western and Marxist thought systems, so it is quite important to examine his thoughts critically and conduct source-tracing in China.FindingsHence, in the process of constructing and developing socialist political economy with Chinese characteristics, there is an urgent need to focus on exploring the value of excellent traditional Chinese culture at the theoretical level and combining the development and dissemination of the history of thoughts and the historical position of Chinese reality to realize the innovation and development of socialist political economy with Chinese characteristics.Originality/valueMeanwhile, while absorbing nutrition from excellent traditional Chinese culture, it is necessary to establish scientific coordinates rather than use the discourse systems and paradigms of Western economics to interpret ancient Chinese economic thoughts. It is necessary to adhere to, inherit and develop Marxist political economy and absorb nutrition from Chinese excellent traditional culture to construct socialist political economy with Chinese characteristics.
