Many teams studying benthic biodiversity have faced the challenge of identifying collected specimens while they are at sea. The use of pictures is an efficient way to increase samples processing, while limiting wrong or incorrect identifications that can be done when many people are working on the same project at different times. This catalogue presents a non-exhaustive inventory of more than 750 taxa, most of them named to the species level, of benthic invertebrates recorded in Baffin Bay (Arctic) with a special attention paid to species recorded along the Southwest Greenland coast. It is designed to be an accurate tool for biologists to identify benthic invertebrates occurring in trawl/dredge samples, with the objective to decrease number of preserved samples and time spent on post-survey sample processing. It has proven particularly useful during the implementation of benthos monitoring on national fisheries assessment surveys as recently recommended by CAFF-CBMP (CAFF 2017) as a way to increase our knowledge of long-term and large-scale trends in Arctic benthos communities. The catalogue proposes original photos and drawings. A must for biologist studying benthos from Arctic waters!

Abstract A comprehensive review of macroinvertebrate studies conducted along the Iranian running waters over the last 15 years has been made by providing the most updated checklist of the Iranian running waters benthic invertebrates. Running waters ecosystems are complex environments known for their importance in terms of biodiversity. As part of the analysis, we endeavored to provide the critical re-identification of the reported species by through comparisons with the database of the Animal Diversity Web (ADW) and appropriate literature sources or expert knowledge. A total of 126 species belonging to 4 phyla have been compiled from 57 references. The phylum Arthropoda was found to comprise the most taxa (n = 104) followed by Mollusca, Annelida and Platyhelminthes. Ongoing efforts in the Iranian running waters regarding biomonitoring indices development, testing, refinement and validation are yet to be employed in streams and rivers. Overall, we suggest that future macroinvertebrate studies in Iranian running waters should be focused on long-term changes by broadening target species and strong efforts to publish data in peer-reviewed journals in English.

It would be convenient if preserved animals could be used to determine fresh-weight biomass. However, marine annelids, nematodes, bivalves, amphipods, and isopods all lost weight when preserved and stored in 70% isopropanol. In 10% formalin only bivalves lost weight significantly; the other groups showed evidence of small increases or decreases. Many animals preserved in alcohol decreased sharply in weight within a few minutes, probably due to dehydration. In formalin most increased at first, then slowly decreased. The response to preservatives is complex, involving short-term changes of water content and long-term changes of tissue composition. Precision, though not accuracy, of preserved wet weights can only be achieved after specimens have been in preservatives for a month or more, especially in the case of isopropanol. For these reasons, wet and dry weight biomass figures should be determined from fresh, unpreserved animals.Key words: fixation, preservation (organisms), biomass determination, benthos

Abstract In China, the fungicide fludioxonil, that accumulates and persists in sediments, has a widespread agricultural use to control various fungal diseases. Its residues may cause toxic effects to benthic and pelagic aquatic fauna, thereby impacting ecosystem service functions of aquatic ecosystems.To assess the environmental risks of fludioxonil, sediment-spiked single-species toxicity tests with benthic macroinvertebrates as well as a sediment-spiked indoor freshwater microcosm experiment were performed. The microcosm test systems were populated with benthic invertebrates also used in the single-species tests. In all experiments artificial sediment was used. The single-species tests were conducted with 8 benthic macroinvertebrates covering different taxonomic groups typical for the Yangtze River Delta, China. The 28d-EC10 values thus obtained were used to construct species sensitivity distributions (SSDs) and the hazardous concentration to 5% of the species tested (HC5) was used to derive a provisional long-term Tier-2 regulatory acceptable concentration (RAC) for benthic invertebrates by applying an assessment factor of 3.The microcosm experiment was conducted to study treatment-related responses of benthic macroinvertebrates and pelagic zooplankton. The lowest No Observed Effect Concentrations (NOECs) of benthic invertebrate and of pelagic zooplankton populations were used to derive provisional long-term Tier-3 RACs for, respectively, benthic and pelagic invertebrates by applying an assessment factor of 2. The RACs thus obtained were compared with Predicted Environmental Concentrations (PECs) of fludioxonil in overlying water and the sediment compartment of edge-of-field ponds after application of this fungicide in rice, grape, wheat, maize and tomato crops. Overall, the risks of long-term exposure of fludioxonil to benthic invertebrates and pelagic zooplankton species in these Chinese edge-of-field ponds appear to be relatively small, but some risks cannot be excluded for ponds adjacent to rice.
