Abstract For more accurate measurement of the potential alpha energy concentration (PAEC) of radon progeny by the liquid scintillation counting (LSC) method, its counting efficiency was studied in this work. A radon progeny standard source was used to provide different concentrations of radon progeny, and the progeny collected on the sampling filters were measured with a low background liquid scintillation counter. The result showed that the quenching effect could not be ignored, and the counting efficiency was estimated to be 86.12%. The co-comparison experiments showed that the PAECs of radon progeny measured by the LSC methods were in generally consistent with those of other three methods. It indicates that for more accurate measurements of PAEC of radon progeny by using the LSC method, the counting efficiency should be well determined.

The effects of different measurement conditions and sample preparation in liquid scintillation counting of benzene for 14C dating were tested. The goal of this work was to find the highest figure of merit through the variation of scintillation cocktail to benzene ratio, and measurement windows. Measurements were performed on 5ml of benzene plus increasing quantities of scintillation cocktail (7g of PPO and 0.5g of Me2POPOP in 1L of scintillation-grade toluene). Spectra of both background and standard were obtained and the counting windows selected for the highest figure of merit (Q). The best condition was 5ml of benzene plus 0.75ml of scintillation cocktail. This spectrum is compared with that of 1) pure toluene-14C plus cocktail, and 2) pure benzene-14C in which the equivalent amount of PPO and Me2POPOP present in 0.75ml of cocktail was dissolved. A correlation between the increase of the amount of cocktail and the broadening of the spectrum was observed. The effect of wrapping the upper part of the counting vial with aluminum foil to reduce background was also tested. A drastic background increment was observed in the low energy range, for unwrapped vials; the standard spectrum showed a broadening and a lower counting efficiency which reduced the figure of merit.

We evaluate high-purity synthetic silica vials in both delrin and active plastic holders (Pico adapters™) for 14C dating, using liquid scintillation counting of benzene. We have designed synthetic silica vials in the form of simple cylinder-cells based on the standard 7-ml vial. We have also designed a delrin holder for supporting 7-ml silica or glass vials. We compare the counting efficiency and background of the silica vials with Teflon, plastic and low-K glass vials for both delrin holders and Pico adapters in the 1220 Quantulus and Packard Tri-Carb 2660 XL, fitted with a plastic detector guard. In the 1220 Quantulus, synthetic silica vials in Pico adapters have the highest figure of merit (FM), closely followed by silica in delrin holders and Teflon. In the Packard Tri-Carb 2660 XL, plastic vials in Pico adapters give the highest FM.
