Keys to Sterile, Crustose Saxicolous and Terricolous Lichens Occurring in the British Isles

AbstractA set of artificial keys is presented to all those crustose lichens (except most species of Lepraria and Leprolomd) which commonly occur without fruiting bodies on rock or soil in the British Isles. A number of predominantly corticolous species that occasionally also occur on rocks are included, as well as several undescribed but well-understood entities.

Introduction. The genus Lepraria includes diffuse or indefinitely delimited species, always sterile, Lendemer (1) naming it „the most unusual member of the sterile lichen crusts”. According to Tonsberg (2), the leprarioid state appeared as an adaptation to a substrate characterized by dry surfaces, in sites with high humidity and low illumination. The thallus is leprose with an entirely sorediate surface. The lack of fruiting bodies has made the lichens from this group among the least known and studied for a long time. The increase in the number of studies on sterile crustose lichens in recent period has led to an increase in the number of accepted species of the genus Lepraria. The information on the genus Lepraria is not uniformly distributed, the current checklist describes only two species, L. caesioalba and L. finkii in Romania. The recent appearance of several studies that indicate the presence in Romania of other species of the genus mentioned, created the motivation of this study. Material and methods. This study is based on material from the Babes-Bolyai University (CL) herbaria in Cluj-Napoca, Romania and literature data. For 13 species, specimens have been examined. Results. The key for the species of genus Lepraria is proposed, adapted from Wirth (3). The species distribution maps in Romania are given. Conclusions. Fifteen Romanian species are revised, Lepraria eburnea, L. ecorticata, L. umbricola were reported from two locations, L. neglecta was found only in one location. Most widely distributed species in Romania seems to be L. finkii and L. membranacea.

Graphidaceae is the largest family of tropical crustose lichens, with nearly 2,400 known species, and exhibits a large diversity of ascoma morphologies. Ascomata that open by triangular marginal lobules that become recurved to form geaster-like fruiting bodies, so-called chroodiscoid ascomata, were recently shown to have evolved independently several times within the family. A special type of such ascomata is the gyrotremoid form in which the hymenium and excipulum are organized in concentric rings. In the present study, we address the phylogenetic position of two chroodiscoid species collected in Thailand that form aggregate or gyrotremoid, chroodiscoid ascomata, using a molecular phylogeny of nuclear LSU and mitochondrial SSU rDNA sequences of 92 Graphidaceae. Our morphological, chemical and phylogenetic analyses show that one species is an undescribed species in the genus Astrochapsa, here newly described as A. kalbii Poengsungnoen, Lücking & Lumbsch, with a unique, gyrotremoid ascoma morphology. The second species belongs in the recently established genus Nitidochapsa, which is a close relative of Ocellularia, and is here described as new species N. siamensis Poengsungnoen, Lücking & Lumbsch. Based on these findings, three further new combinations are proposed in the genus Nitidochapsa, viz. N. aggregata (Hale) Poengsungnoen, Lücking & Lumbsch, N. phlyctidea (Vain.) Lücking & Lumbsch, and N. stictoides (Leight.) Tehler, Lücking & Lumbsch. A key to all five species is presented.

Sterile crustose lichens, i. e., those species that do not form fruiting bodies on the territory of Belarus, domestic scientists started to focus only at the beginning of the 21st century, despite the fact that already in the 60–70’s in the 20th century and methods for determining lichen substances in lichens were developed.Subjects of the study were herbarium specimens of lichenized fungi of the genus Lepraria in the amount of 68 herbarium bags from the collection of lichens MSK-L. As a result of the determination of secondary metabolites in the samples and the use of morphological features, it is established that the samples studied are represented by 9 species from the genus Lepraria: L. caesioalba, L. eburnea, L. elobata, L. finkii, L. incana, L. jackii, L., neglecta, L. rigidula и L. vouauxii. Lichen Lepraria caesioalba first time provides for the territory of the republic. The biotopes and substrate association of lichens with the genus Lepraria has been established. The qualitative composition of secondary metabolites of the studied samples is revealed. Among certain species, lichens L. incana and L. finkii are common on the territory of Belarus. The herbarium material on lichens of the genus Lepraria determined using TLC can be used in the preparation of the next volume of “Flora of lichens of Belarus”.

Twenty nine items of correspondence from the mid-1950s discovered recently in the archives of the University Marine Biological Station Millport, and others made available by one of the illustrators and a referee, shed unique light on the publishing history of Collins pocket guide to the sea shore. This handbook, generally regarded as a classic of its genre, marked a huge step forwards in 1958; providing generations of students with an authoritative, concise, affordable, well illustrated text with which to identify common organisms found between the tidemarks from around the coasts of the British Isles. The crucial role played by a select band of illustrators in making this publication the success it eventually became, is highlighted herein. The difficulties of accomplishing this production within commercial strictures, and generally as a sideline to the main employment of the participants, are revealed. Such stresses were not helped by changing demands on the illustrators made by the authors and by the publishers.
