Presented is the concept of paint shop operation for the automotive industry – Paint Shop 4.0, based on the ideas of Industry 4.0 and Digital Factory. A new approach to the issue of car body sequencing, taking into account the actual structure of the paint shop department with buffers, has been presented. In the created application, proprietary car body sequencing algorithms were implemented.

To meet the challenges within automotive industry and provide a basis for future topics, such as the fourth industrial revolution, the digital factory is getting more relevant. At the moment, however, the quality of these digital means cannot be objectively assessed. Therefore, the following paper introduces a novel approach not only for identifying potential for optimization but also for estimating the impacts when modifying the elements of the digital factory.

Factory planning is permanently aspiring to develop its tools. From a historically point of view first of all physical models were integrated in the planning work. With the emerging of computing technology more and more digital models were used. The new approach of Hybrid Factory Planning combines both model worlds in a symbiotically and beneficial manner. Regarding this among other things a content framework and an application scenario are presented.

Light weight materials which possess high strength and durability are being utilized by the automotive industry to increase fuel economy. Rapidly solidified (RS) Al alloys are currently being extensively studied for this purpose. In this investigation the microstructure of an extruded Al-8Fe-2Mo alloy, produced by Pratt & Whitney Aircraft, Goverment Products Div. was examined in a JE0L 2000FX AEM. Both electropolished thin sections, and extraction replicas were examined to characterize this material. The consolidation procedure for producing this material included a 9:1 extrusion at 340°C followed by a 16:1 extrusion at 400°C, utilizing RS powders which have also been characterized utilizing electron microscopy.
