This article discusses the rhetorical construction of self-identity in Ian Smith's autobiography. I argue that in communicating self-identity and claiming historical agency, Smith deploys rhetoric born out of intertextuality. Intertextual references construct nation-building rhetoric that positions Smith as an agent of history. The article demonstrates that Smith's invocation of past texts and citations provokes unintended and problematic meanings. While Smith constructs rhetorical discourse, he is in turn also constructed by that discourse as a subject of history.

Rational construction of self-supporting electrode has been extensively investigated in energy conversion and storage. Herein, hierarchical N-doped carbon encapsulated Ni3S2 grown on 3D porous Ni foam (H-Ni3S2@NC/NF) is controllably synthesized...

Abstract Background Violence against women places them in a vulnerable position with regard to homelessness. Although sometimes invisible, women’s homelessness is a complex reality shrouded in dramatic biographies that should be sensitively addressed to avoid revictimization. Methods With the aim of understanding the chaotic discourse of homeless women’s experiences of violence, a qualitative single-case study was conducted using the photo-elicitation technique. Data were analyzed in accordance with grounded theory. Results The participant’s discourse could be summarized in the following categories: “Living in a spiral of violence”, “Confronting vulnerability and violence”, “Being a strong woman”, “New family networks”, “Re-building mother–child relationships”, and “Nurturing spiritual wellbeing”. Conclusions Supporting homelessness women requires an approach that focuses on the prevention of re-victimization and the consequences of violence in terms of physical and mental health. Shelters are spaces of care for recovery and represent referential elements for the re-construction of self.

Disaccharides 1-3 corresponding to the antigenic determinants of Salmonella serotypes A, B, and D1 were synthesized in a form suited for use in biosensors. The disaccharide determinants each contain a unique 3,6-dideoxyhexose, namely abequose (3,6-dideoxy-D-xylo-hexose), paratose (3,6-dideoxy-D-ribohexose), and tyvelose (3,6-dideoxy-D-arabino-hexose), are α-linked to the 3-position of D-mannopyranose. The disaccharides were further derivatized with a linear aglycon that has a terminal amino group, and can be readily coupled to pertinent chains carrying a terminal thiol for the construction of self-assembled monolayers (SAMs). Efficient routes that employed a single 3,6-dideoxygenation step were developed for the synthesis of paratoside 15 and tyveloside 22.Key words: Salmonella O-antigens, lipopolysaccharide, abequose, paratose, tyvelose, 3,6-dideoxyhexose, deoxygenation, glycoside tethers, immobilization via pentenyl glycosides.

We construct a model for double parton distribution functions (dPDFs) based on the notion of self-similarity, pursued earlier for small x physics at HERA. The most general form of dPDFs contains total 13 parameters to be fitted from data of proton–proton collision at LHC. It is shown that the constructed dPDF does not factorize into two single PDFs in conformity with QCD expectation, and it satisfies the condition that at the kinematic boundary x1+x2 = 1 (where x1 and x2 are the longitudinal fractional momenta of two partons), the dPDF vanishes.
