The numerical models for the injection of warm water (in the temperature range from 300 to 340 K) into a cold porous formation are considered. Simplified models describing the processes of heat and mass transfer are proposed. The influence of the parameters determining the initial state of the porous medium, the boundary pressure, temperature and moisture content on the rate of propagation of hydrodynamic and temperature fields in the porous medium is investigated. It has been established that it is economically feasible to melt frozen soils saturated with ice and gas (air) at a sufficiently low temperature of the injected water (about 300 K).

Abstract The method of fundamental solutions has been applied to evaluate the influence of fish models geometrical features on the target strength (TS) directivity and TS frequency response of swimbladdered fish. Simplified models were considered for two fish species: gilt-head sea bream (Sparus aurata, Linnaeus 1758) and Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar, Linnaeus 1758), and different geometrical details of their morphology were studied, such as backbone presence, and its curvature or the inclusion of vertebrae modulation. Swimbladder shape and tilt, together with the inclusion of backbone (and its realistic curvature) for dorsal measurements were the most important features for proper estimation of mean TS. The estimation of mean TS is considered including the effect of fish tilt, the echosounder frequency, and the fish-to-transducer distance.

We study novel geometrical and transport properties of a 2D model of disordered fibre networks. To assess the geometrical structure we determine, analytically, the probability distribution for the number of fibre intersections and resulting segment sizes in the network as a function of fibre density and length. We also determine, numerically, the probability distribution of pore perimeters and areas. We find a non-monotonous behavior of the perimeter distribution whose main features can be explained by solving for two simplified models of the line network. Finally we formulate a mean field approximation to conduction, above the percolation threshold, using the derived results. Relevance of the results to fracture networks will be discussed.
