Data compression of three-dimensional computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation data is crucial to allow effective data-streaming for drone navigation and control. This problem is computationally challenging due to the complexity of the geometrical features present in the CFD data, and cannot be tackled by standard compression techniques such as sphere-tree. In this report, we present two different methods based on octree and cuboid primitives to compress velocity isosurfaces and volumetric data in three dimensions. Our volume compression method achieves a 1400 compression rate of raw simulation data and allows parallel computing.

AbstractRoad networks result from a subtle balance between geographical coverage and rapid access to strategic points. An understanding of their structure is fundamental when it comes to evaluating and improving territorial accessibility. This study is designed to provide insight into the progressive structuring of territorial patterns by analyzing the evolution of road networks. Studying road network morphogenesis requires geohistorical data, provided here by historical maps from which earlier road networks can be digitized. A hypergraph is constructed from these networks by combining road segments into “ways” on the basis of a method for defining the continuity of road segments. Next, indicators are computed for these ways based on topological and geometrical features. The road patterns of three cities in the Burgundy Franche-Comte region of France (Dijon, Besançon, and Pontarlier) at three historical periods (the 18th, 19th, and twentieth centuries) are then analyzed. In this manner, their topological features and centrality characteristics can be compared from snapshots at different times and places. The innovative method proposed in this paper helps us to read features of the road patterns accurately and to make simple interpretations. It can be applied to any territory for which data is available. The results highlight the underlying structure of the three cities, reveal information about the history and the functioning of the networks, and give preliminary insights into the morphogenesis of those cities. Prospectively this work aims to identify the mechanisms that drive change in road networks. Detecting stability or variation in indicators over time can help in identifying similar behavior, despite geographic and cultural distances, as well as evolution mechanisms linked to specificities of each city. The study of road network morphogenesis can make a major contribution to understanding how road network structure affects accessibility and mobility.

Abstract Recent Italian earthquakes have shown the seismic vulnerability of many typical historical masonry churches characterized by one nave and wooden roofs. Under transverse earthquake the nave transverse response of this kind of churches can be influenced by the geometrical and material features. To increase the seismic performance, strengthening interventions aimed to pursue the global box-behavior by the realization of dissipative roof-structure represent a valid strategy especially for avoiding out-of-plane mechanisms. In this way, the roof structure must be able to represent a tool for the damped rocking of the perimeter walls. Cross-laminated timber panels (CLT) have been recently adopted as roof-diaphragm having shown valid ductile behavior in experimental tests, satisfying the conservative restoration criteria at the same time. In this paper, after a description of the numerical approach for the damped rocking mechanism for one nave configuration church, the effectiveness of different CLT based roof-diaphragms in the nave transverse response is investigated for four historical churches. The seismic responses are performed by comparative dynamic nonlinear analyses and the results are shown in terms of displacements and shear actions transferred to the façade. The influence of the geometrical features of the churches on the nave transversal response is deepened by sensitivity analyses with the aim to predict the displacements and shear variations under the same earthquake excitation.

High-quality crystals of a certain polymorphic form of thiobarbituric acid containing both keto and enol tautomers in the asymmetric unit were obtained. High-resolution X-ray diffraction data up to sinθ/λ = 1.0 Å−1 were collected and subsequently successfully used for the refining of the multipolar model of electron density distribution. The use of a crystal containing both ketone and enol forms allowed a direct comparison of the topological analysis results and a closer look at the differences between these two forms. The similarities and differences between the deformation densities, electrostatic potentials, Laplacian maps and bond characteristics of the tautomers were analysed. Additionally, the spectrum of the intermolecular interactions was identified and studied from classical, relatively strong N-H···O and O-H···O hydrogen bonds through weaker N-H···S hydrogen bonds to weak interactions (for instance, C-H···O, C-H···S and N···O). The results of these studies point toward the importance of including both the geometrical features and the details of the electron density distribution in the analysis of such weak interactions.

The role of some geometrical characteristics of the notches machined in circular discs, in order to determine the mode-I fracture toughness of brittle materials, is discussed. The study is implemented both analytically and numerically. For the analytic study advantage is taken of a recently introduced solution for the stress- and displacement-fields developed in a finite disc with a central notch of finite width and length and rounded corners. The variation of the stresses along strategic loci and the deformation of the perimeter of the notch obtained analytically are used for the calibration/validation of a flexible numerical model, which is then used for a parametric investigation of the role of geometrical features of the notched disc (thickness of the disc, length and width of the notch, radius of the rounded corners of the notch). It is concluded that the role of the width of the notch is of critical importance. Both the analytic and the numerical studies indicate definitely that ignoring the accurate geometric shape of the notch leads to erroneous results concerning the actual stress field around the crown of the notch. Therefore, it is possible that misleading values of the fracture toughness of the material of the disc may be obtained.

Ultra-widefield fluorescein angiography (UWFA) is an emerging imaging modality used to characterise pathologies in the retinal vasculature, such as microaneurysms (MAs) and vascular leakages. Despite its potential value for diagnosis and disease screening, objective quantitative assessment of retinal pathologies by UWFA is currently limited because laborious manual processing is required. In this report, we describe a geometrical method for uneven brightness compensation inherent to UWFA imaging technique. The correction function is based on the geometrical eyeball shape, therefore it is fully automated and depends only on pixel distance from the center of the imaged retina. The method’s performance was assessed on a database containing 256 UWFA images with the use of several image quality measures that show the correction method improves image quality. The method is also compared to the commonly used CLAHE approach and was also employed in a pilot study for vascular segmentation, giving a noticeable improvement in segmentation results. Therefore, the method can be used as an image preprocessing step in retinal UWFA image analysis.

The use of laser processing for the creation of diverse morphological patterns onto the surface of polymer scaffolds represents a method for overcoming bacterial biofilm formation and inducing enhanced cellular dynamics. We have investigated the influence of ultra-short laser parameters on 3D-printed poly-ε-caprolactone (PCL) and poly-ε-caprolactone/hydroxyapatite (PCL/HA) scaffolds with the aim of creating submicron geometrical features to improve the matrix biocompatibility properties. Specifically, the present research was focused on monitoring the effect of the laser fluence (F) and the number of applied pulses (N) on the morphological, chemical and mechanical properties of the scaffolds. SEM analysis revealed that the femtosecond laser treatment of the scaffolds led to the formation of two distinct surface geometrical patterns, microchannels and single microprotrusions, without triggering collateral damage to the surrounding zones. We found that the microchannel structures favor the hydrophilicity properties. As demonstrated by the computer tomography results, surface roughness of the modified zones increases compared to the non-modified surface, without influencing the mechanical stability of the 3D matrices. The X-ray diffraction analysis confirmed that the laser structuring of the matrices did not lead to a change in the semi-crystalline phase of the PCL. The combinations of two types of geometrical designs—wood pile and snowflake—with laser-induced morphologies in the form of channels and columns are considered for optimizing the conditions for establishing an ideal scaffold, namely, precise dimensional form, mechanical stability, improved cytocompatibility and antibacterial behavior.
