This chapter deals with Management Information Systems situated in a futuristic context, namely that of a “service factory” of the future. The vision of such a service factory is to become a major driver for the large-scale exploitation of multi-agent information processing technologies, e.g. the manufacturing sector in a service-oriented view, and explore the potential of the “production as a service” approach as both an enabler and a catalyst towards the realisation of intelligent and environmentally conscious factories. In the chapter, the author presents the service factory concept and analyses its potential business impact. The chapter includes two appendices related to the real world validation of the concept with members of the industrial community.

Service-oriented software systems are inherently complex and have to cope with an increasing number of exceptional conditions in order to meet the system’s dynamic requirements. This work proposes an architecture framework which has exception handling capability. This framework ensures the credibility of service-oriented software, during the architectural stage, by adding exception handling-related architecture elements and modeling exception handling process. It allows a clear separation of concerns between the business function and the exception handling unit, using reflection mechanism. It plays an important guiding role for achieving reliable service-oriented system.

Future technologies in automotive mobility as well as new factory and logistic concepts are changing the framework in car production. Innovations and uncertainties (e. g. the impact of new technologies) have to be taken in consideration for the factory of the future. New tasks, such as planning the assembly of batteries, need to be solved fast and intuitively. This paper presents an approach to this topic.

SummaryIn this overview paper, we discuss the basic principles underlying service-oriented computing in general, and (Web) services in particular. We discuss the important differences between (Web) services and Web applications and other models in Internet computing. Finally, we discuss where we see the future research challenges in the area of service composition.
