AbstractThe aim of this work is to implement a new process for the design and production of orthopaedic devices to realize entirely by Additive Manufacturing (AM). In particular, a generative algorithm for parametric modelling of flexible structures to use in orthopaedic devices has been developed. The developed modelling algorithm has been applied to a case study based on the design and production of a customized elbow orthosis made by Selective Laser Sintering. The results obtained have demonstrated that the developed algorithm overcomes many drawbacks typical of traditional CAD modelling approaches. FEM simulations have been also performed to validate the design of the orthosis. The new modelling algorithm allows designers to model flexible structures with no deformations or mismatches and to create parametric CAD models to use for the production of orthopaedic devices through AM technologies.

The objectives of this publication are the analysis of surfaces and edges of a new geometric spiroid hob with arched profile in axial section and the definition of their equations for computer modelling. On the basis of this we will work out the CAD model of hob for our further geometric calculations.

The paper points out the advantages of rapid prototyping for improving the performances/constructive optimization of mixing devices used in process industries, here exemplified to propeller types ones. The multidisciplinary optimization of the propeller profile affords its design using parametric CAD methods. Starting from the mathematical curve equations proposed for the blade profile, it was determined its three-dimensional virtual model. The challenge has been focused on the variation of propeller pitch and external diameter. Three dimensional ranges were manufactured using the additive manufacturing process with Marker Boot 3D printer. The mixing performances were tested on the mixing equipment measuring the minimum rotational speed and the correspondent shaft torque for complete suspension achieved for each of the three models. The virtual and rapid prototyping method is newly proposed by the authors to obtain the basic data for scale up of the mixing systems, in the case of flexible production (of low quantities), in which both the nature and concentration of the constituents in the final product varies often. It is an efficient and low cost method for the rapid identification of the optimal mixing device configuration, which contributes to the costs reduction and to the growing of the output.

Abstract We will first recall that the organization of airframe designing stands in direct relation to the performance capabilities of available tools, which is, in fact, what determines the number and the nature of project iterations. We then present and analyze an organization type which can nowadays be recommended in view of the currently available CAD, computation and mathematical optimization means. This leads to a first design which is followed by experimental verification, with a key role for flight tests. The final design is checked with the aid of computation models that have been calibrated with the results of the performed tests. We will then examine new tools, since they are factors in the future evolution of the design methodology, including: • availability of the “design history”, as a set of all data of the whole process, • structure optimization with parametric CAD and multidisciplinary optimization • “feature” modeling • enhancement of the computation methods As a conclusion, we show that significant gains in terms of productivity and quality can be expected from these new products, both at design and at production level. What remains, however, to be found, are the most appropriate concurrent engineering organizations that are best suited to these new tools.

Usually the gear modification is a main measure to reduce the vibration and noise of the gears, but in view of the complexity of the gear modification, topology optimization method was used to optimize the structure of the gear. The minimum volume was set as the direct optimization goal. To achieve the target of reducing contact stress, tooth root bending stress and improving flexibility, the upper bound of the stress and lower bound of the flexibility were set appropriately, thus realizing multi-objective optimization indirectly. A method for converting topology result into parametric CAD model which can be modified was presented, by fitting the topology result with simple straight lines and arcs, the model can be smoothed automatically, after further regulating, the geometry reconstruction was finished. After topology optimization, the resulting structure and properties of the gear are consistent with cavity gear. While reducing the weight of the gear, the noise can be reduced and its life would be extended through increasing flexibility and reducing tooth root stress.

With Pro/Toolkit of Pro/E and ADO(ActiveX Data Object) database technology, part parametric CAD system is developed and an successful instance is introduced in the paper. In the CAD system, interface between Pro/E and VC++6.0 is created correctly using Pro / Toolkit and user interface for part parametric designing can be achieved by means of dll( dll dynamic link) library built in VC++6.0 .Meanwhile ADO database is applied in the CAD system to manage all part parameters and thus part revising and updating can be realized quickly. The developing method in the CAD system not only is applicable to typical mechanical part designing but also be helpful to establishing standard part library.
