Genealogical research is full of opportunities for connecting generations. Millions of people pursue that purpose as they put together family trees that span hundreds of years. These data are valuable in linking people to the people of their past and in developing personal identities, and they can also be used in other ways. The purposes of this paper are to first give a short history of the development and practice of family history and genealogical research in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, which has developed the FamilySearch website, and second, to show how genealogical data can illustrate forward generation migration flows across the United States by analyzing resulting patterns and statistics. For example, descendants of people born in several large cities exhibited distinct geographies of migration away from the cities of their forebears.

AbstractThe global DNA ancestry industry appeals to various “markets”: diasporic groups seeking to reconstruct lost kinship links; adoptees looking for biological relatives; genealogists tracing their family trees; and those who are merely curious about what DNA can reveal about their identity. However, the language of empowerment and openness employed by DNA ancestry-testing companies in their publicity materials masks the important commercial and private interests at stake. Drawing particularly on the experiences of Native and Indigenous American communities, this article highlights some of the contradictions and dilemmas engendered by the industry, and questions to what extent its practices can empower users without infringing upon the rights of other groups.

Dedications to an individual by members of his immediate family were common throughout the Greek world, but in Rhodian territory a more complex form of family dedication is attested, with several members of the wider family circle participating and listing their exact relationship to the honorand. When these inscriptions with their various kinship terms are correctly interpreted, stemmas of large family groups may be drawn up. The method which must be used in understanding these ‘family monuments’ is shown by an analysis of IG xii (1) 72 a–b, and the texts of four similar inscriptions are examined and revised so that family trees may be created for their family groups (ILind 382 b; Inschr. Nisyros 3 with IG xii (3) 103; IG xii (1) 107, the most complex of all Rhodian ‘family monuments’). The presence in IG xii (1) 107 of Hagesandros the son of Paionios, one of the three Rhodian sculptors of the Sperlonga and Laocoon statuary groups, leads to a reconsideration of the date of the groups and of the career of the only one of the three sculptors otherwise attested as an artist, Athanodoros the son of Hagesandros. It can be shown by securely dated pieces of epigraphical evidence that Hagesandros and Athanodoros were born c.80 BC and had their artistic floruit early in the reign of Augustus. The Sperlonga and Laocoon sculpture must therefore be dated to this period.

Family history research has become a very popular hobby during the last few years due to the ready access to records of births and marriages. Many people have rigorously traced their ancestors back to 1700 and earlier, corresponding to some 12 generations. The principal motivation of most amateur genealogists is to learn about the lives of their forebears and they trust these ‘legal’ records without question and do not usually acknowledge that cuckoldry may have occurred and that their true ancestors may not have been the ones recorded.
