The transition in Europe from a predominantly agricultural society dominated by a landed aristocracy to an emerging commercial one with an expanding bourgeoisie gave birth to a reformulated expression of Christianity whose doctrines could better legitimate the new institutions and practices of commercial society. Whereas Catholicism provided an ideology that justified the landlords’ capture of economic surplus, Protestantism legitimated the emerging bourgeoisie’s ability to do the same. Protestantism’s privileging of work and asceticism afforded social respectability to the bourgeoisie and ideological support for its capturing a share of society’s surplus. It gave legitimacy to the harsh social treatment of a rising class of wage workers who had been separated from any ownership, control, or ready access to the means of production. Protestantism served as a transitional religion between a traditional agricultural world dominated by Catholic doctrine and a more modern commercial one dominated by secular thought.

Abstract The fission yeast Schizosaccharomyces japonicus has recently emerged as a powerful system for studying the evolution of essential cellular processes, drawing on similarities as well as key differences between S. japonicus and the related, well-established model Schizosaccharomyces pombe. We have deployed the open-source, modular code and tools originally developed for PomBase, the S. pombe model organism database (MOD), to create JaponicusDB (www.japonicusdb.org), a new MOD dedicated to S. japonicus. By providing a central resource with ready access to a growing body of experimental data, ontology-based curation, seamless browsing and querying, and the ability to integrate new data with existing knowledge, JaponicusDB supports fission yeast biologists to a far greater extent than any other source of S. japonicus data. JaponicusDB thus enables S. japonicus researchers to realise the full potential of studying a newly emerging model species, and illustrates the widely applicable power and utility of harnessing reusable PomBase code to build a comprehensive, community-maintainable repository of species-relevant knowledge.

Digital technologies and information systems have played a pivotal role during the past SARS pandemic and continue to assist with the recovery process during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Nonetheless, the technologies themselves have advanced significantly and allow ready access and ease of use to individuals, organizations, and communities. We focus on a set of such technologies – Readily Available Digital Technologies (RADT) – and show how they assist during various phases of management of the ongoing crisis. We utilize an existing crisis management framework and emphasize the role and impact of RADTs. Furthermore, we extend the crisis management framework to include a resilience phase and explore examples from extant academic and practitioner literature to demonstrate its applicability in the current context. We invite future researchers to build further on our exploratory framework and highlight its potential contributions.

A series of fourteen 2-aryl-3-phenyl-2,3-dihydro-4H-pyrido[3,2-e][1,3]thiazin-4-ones was prepared at room temperature by T3P-mediated cyclization of N-phenyl-C-aryl imines with thionicotinic acid, two difficult substrates. The reactions were operationally simple, did not require specialized equipment or anhydrous solvents, could be performed as either two or three component reactions, and gave moderate–good yields as high as 63%. This provides ready access to N-phenyl compounds in this family, which have been generally difficult to prepare. As part of the study, the first crystal structure of neutral thionicotinic acid is also reported, and showed the molecule to be in the form of the thione tautomer. Additionally, the synthesized compounds were tested against T. brucei, the causative agent of Human African Sleeping Sickness. Screening at 50 µM concentration showed that five of the compounds strongly inhibited growth and killed parasites.

Tetrodotoxin (TTX) is an indispensable probe in neuroscience, a biosynthetic and ecological enigma, and one of the most celebrated targets of synthetic chemistry. Here, we present a stereoselective synthesis of TTX that proceeds in 22 steps starting from a readily available glucose derivative. The central cyclohexane ring of TTX and its α-tertiary amine moiety was established via the intramolecular 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition of a nitrile oxide, followed by alkynyl addition to the resultant isoxazoline. After some carefully chosen protecting group manipulations, a ruthenium-catalyzed hydroxylactonization set the stage for the formation of its dioxa-adamantane core. Installation of the guanidine, oxidation of a primary alcohol, and late-stage epimerization of the resultant aldehyde gave a mixture of TTX and anhydro TTX. Our synthesis represents one of the most effective of TTX reported to date and could give ready access to biologically active derivatives.

Background: Evidence-Based Medicine (EBM) can be defined as “the integration of best research evidence with clinical expertise and patients’ values”. It is the best evidence in making decisions about the care of individual patients. The growing awareness of the limitations of traditional information on clinical decisions led to a shift in medical practice from unsystematic observations from clinical experience, towards evidence-based medicine. The principles of evidence-based medicine have become core concepts of undergraduate, postgraduate, continuing medical education, courses, and workshops offered to health professionals. Irrational prescription being a global problem leading to ineffective or unsafe treatment and that sometimes resulting from the lack of using the EBM. Objective: To assess awareness, attitude, knowledge of EBM among the ambulatory care physicians and its effect in their prescriptions pattern. Methods: A cross-sectional questionnaire study was done to assess the knowledge, attitudes, and practices regarding evidence-based medicine among ambulatory care physicians in 3 hospitals in the Al-Kharj region. In addition, a random sample of ambulatory care prescriptions were collected, then the World Health Organization (WHO) prescription indicators were used to evaluate the physicians prescribing behavior. The prescriptions were collected from the pharmacy department after obtaining approval from the hospital director for each hospital. Result: There was a positive attitude among the ambulatory physicians toward EBM (84%), but there were limit to the basic EBM knowledge (<50 %). Average number of medication encounter was out of the WHO standard value (>1.8%). The Barriers that faced the physicians were included Lack of time (47.7%) and no ready access to EBM (43.1%). The percentage of medications prescribe by generic name was varied between the hospitals, AKFAH (100%), AKMICH (90%) and PSABH (74.05%). Conclusion: In general, there was a positive attitude among the ambulatory physicians toward EBM. The frequent barriers that face the physician to apply EBM included lack of time, no ready access to EBM, and lack of reliable evidence. The attitude and knowledge have a proportion relation to WHO prescribing indicators. It was observed the hospital implement an electronic system were more compliant with prescribing with the generic name.
