Nowadays, most organizations need to improve their decision-making process using Big Data. To achieve this, they have to store Big Data, perform an analysis, and transform the results into useful and valuable information. To perform this, it's necessary to deal with new challenges in designing and creating data warehouse. Traditionally, creating a data warehouse followed well-governed process based on relational databases. The influence of Big Data challenged this traditional approach primarily due to the changing nature of data. As a result, using NoSQL databases has become a necessity to handle Big Data challenges. In this article, the authors show how to create a data warehouse on NoSQL systems. They propose the Object2NoSQL process that generates column-oriented physical models starting from a UML conceptual model. To ensure efficient automatic transformation, they propose a logical model that exhibits a sufficient degree of independence so as to enable its mapping to one or more column-oriented platforms. The authors provide experiments of their approach using a case study in the health care field.

Data mining is the process of analyzing data from different perspectives and summarizing it into useful information - information that can be used to increase revenue, cuts costs, or both. Data mining software is one of a number of analytical tools for analyzing data. Technically, data mining is the process of finding correlations or patterns among dozens of fields in large relational databases. This paper discusses data mining technique such as regression and clustering which is a process model for analyzing data and describes the support that SPSS provides for this model. SPSS-based analysis and application construction process is illustrated through a case study in the agricultural domain-ornamental plants. Cluster analysis or clustering was used is the task of assigning a set of objects into groups so that the objects in the same cluster are more similar to each other than to those in other clusters. In this survey clustering technique divides growth factors into several independent categories. Also, regression technique which was used includes many techniques for modeling and analyzing several variables, when the focus is on the relationship between a dependent variable and one or more independent variables. More specifically, regression analysis helps one understand how the typical value of the dependent variable changes when any one of the independent variables is varied, while the other independent variables are held fixed. In this research, analyzed data with regression technique showed the effect of chlorophyll content on the number of flowers.

Databases are an important part of today’s applications where large amounts of data need to be stored, processed, and accessed quickly. One of the important criteria when choosing to use a database technology is its data processing performance. In this paper, some methods for optimizing the database structure and queries were applied on two popular open-source database management systems: MySQL as a relational DBMS, and document-based MySQL as a non-relational DBMS. The main objective of this paper was to conduct a comparative analysis of the impact that the proposed optimization methods have on each specific DBMS when carrying out CRUD (CREATE, READ, UPDATE, DELETE) requests. To perform the analysis and performance evaluation of CRUD operations for different amounts of data, a case study testing architecture based on Java was developed and used to show how the databases’ proposed optimization methods can influence the performance of the application, and to highlight the differences in response time and complexity. The results obtained show the degree to which the proposed optimization methods contributed to the application’s performance improvement in the case of both databases; based on these, a detailed analysis and several conclusions are presented to support a decision for choosing a specific approach.

Legacy Information Systems play key-roles on organizations development and growth. However, they can be considered as risky factor to operations chain whether they do not meet the demanding or become acting as single point of failures. In this work, we propose a migration model which is able to handle systems that depend on Relational Databases and its changes were driven through the use of a distributed middleware. We also pose how this approach was successfully applied while migrating a Legacy Information System to a Cloud Computing based infra-structure, adding fault-tolerance to its architecture as a competitive advantage, enabling the related services to be clustered and then horizontal scaled on demand. All major concerns on how the whole solution and its aggregated tools were conceived are discussed in high-level details, so them can be solely reproduced and integrated to another systems in order to achieve the same goals or improve its level of quality assurance.

The emerging use of object-relational databases with Web technologies has only recently begun. This chapter discusses a practical realization of an application using this technology. The aim is to show readers how to construct a full application from a design using object-oriented features up to the implementation. In this chapter, we highlight important or difficult stages with an emphasis on the mapping of object design into Oracle 8i and the use of stored procedures with the extended features for objects manipulation of Oracle 8i. This enables developers to construct professional Web applications achieving a high modularity and evolution capacity with an accelerated development phase in comparison with the traditional approach.

Hypertext links are, for semistructured data and narrative documents in XML databases, a fitting analogue to foreign-key references for structured data in relational databases. We encode hypertext links with XLink. For processing the links, we use the XLink processor HyQuery, an XQuery module which turns a native, XQuery-enabled XML database into a hyperdata system. This system is used in a lab course "XML Technology" and in the case study XTunes, a Web application that manages metadata and recordings of classical music.

This article argues that the study of literary representations of landscapes can be aided and enriched by the application of digital geographic technologies. As an example, the article focuses on the methods and preliminary findings of LITESCAPE.PT—Atlas of Literary Landscapes of Mainland Portugal, an on-going project that aims to study literary representations of mainland Portugal and to explore their connections with social and environmental realities both in the past and in the present. LITESCAPE.PT integrates traditional reading practices and ‘distant reading’ approaches, along with collaborative work, relational databases, and geographic information systems (GIS) in order to classify and analyse excerpts from 350 works of Portuguese literature according to a set of ecological, socioeconomic, temporal and cultural themes. As we argue herein this combination of qualitative and quantitative methods—itself a response to the difficulty of obtaining external funding—can lead to (a) increased productivity, (b) the pursuit of new research goals, and (c) the creation of new knowledge about natural and cultural history. As proof of concept, the article presents two initial outcomes of the LITESCAPE.PT project: a case study documenting the evolving literary geography of Lisbon and a case study exploring the representation of wolves in Portuguese literature.

In recent years, with the increase in the volume and complexity of data, choosing a suitable database for storing huge amounts of data is not easy, because it must consider aspects such as manageability, scalability, and extensibility. Nowadays, the NoSQL databases have gained immense popularity for their efficiency in managing such datasets compared to relational databases. However, relational databases also exhibit some advantages in certain circumstances, therefore many applications use a combined approach: relational and non-relational. This paper performs a comparative evaluation of two popular open-source DBMSs: MySQL Document Store and Elasticsearch as non-relational DBMSs; this comparison is based on a detailed analysis of CRUD operations for different amounts of data showing how the databases could be modeled and used in an application. A case-study application was developed for this purpose in Java programming language and Spring framework using for data storage both relational MySQL and non-relational Elasticsearch and MySQL Document Store. To model the real situation encountered in several developed applications that use both relational and non-relational databases, a data replication solution that imports data from the primary relational MySQL database into Elasticsearch and MySQL Document Store as possible alternatives for more efficient data search was proposed and implemented.
