Abstract: The present article aims to analyze the paradoxical and antagonistic composition of the two main characters of Flores (2016), by Afonso Cruz, based on the concepts of lightness and weight proposed by Ítalo Calvino (1997) in his Six memos for the next millennium. Such analysis aims to stablish the complementary feature of these distinct vocations at the same time they are related to the pairs memory/oblivion and real/fiction in order to unravel how, through the dialogue between the characters and the contact with the other’s perspective, they are capable of departing themselves from such extremes, stablish balance and (re)construct their own identities. Keywords: contemporary portuguese literature; memory; identity.

Abstract: The present work consists of a reading of the work Dias úteis (2019), by the Portuguese writer Patrícia Portella, from the perspective of the epigraphs and a particular didascalia. The proposal is to understand the narrative and the thematic construction of the “short stories” of this “novel”, through the paratexts that precede them. Using predominantly Portuguese language authors, Portella calls Machado de Assis, Carlos Drummond de Andrade, Clarice Lispector, Érico Veríssimo and Adélia Prado (Brazilian literature) and completes his repertoire with Maria José – the heteronym of Fernando Pessoa – and Herberto Helder (Portuguese literature). Through an overview, it is clear that the epigraphs of Dias úteis (2019) do not play the role of “edge of the work”, as labeled by Genette (2009). As much as the epigraphs, the didascalia carries a particular meaning within the text and, more than guidelines on how to read the work, it presents the author’s perspective on some ideas that will be explored throughout the plot. Furthermore, the fact that the work is inserted in the scenario of the newest Portuguese fiction stands out. In short, the idea is to understand not only the functionality of the epigraphs and didascalia, but also the way in which these paratexts are articulated in Dias úteis (2019), thus interweaving quoted excerpts, texts and plots. Keywords: epigraphs; didascalia; paratexts; brand new Portuguese fiction; Patricia Portela.

Abstract: The present essay investigates the novels Living with Others (1964), by Isabel da Nóbrega and The Intimates (2010), by Inês Pedrosa, demonstrating how loneliness integrates the figuration of the characters. To this purpose, in the introduction, it approaches the books taking into account the organicity of the contemporary Portuguese novel, as proposed by Miguel Real (2012), and emphasizes the presence of loneliness in the comparison between the two books. Then, it analyzes the configuration of the protagonists Ana and Afonso based on the figuration of fictional subjects according to Carlos Reis (2018). Finally, it points to loneliness as a characteristic in the composition of the characters in both novels, considering the particularities of each one and the socio-literary context in which they are inserted. Furthermore, it defers that “ontological loneliness”, according to Alexandre P. Torres (1967) is a theme of Portuguese literature that, in turn, resignifies itself to represent the individualisms of contemporary man, according to Benilde J. Caniato (2007).Keywords: Living with others; The intimates; character; solitude; Ana; Afonso.

This article tentatively provides acomparative outlook on Polish and Portuguese Romanticism. Taking as a starting point the famous parallel between the opposite ends of Europe sketched by the 19th-century historian Joachim Lelewel, the author claims that Polish and Portuguese literature, although they had almost no direct contact with each other, participated in the same system of cultural coordinates established by European Romanticism. At the same time, both nations had some sort of dispute or clash with Europe, developing syndromes of inferiority, as well as megalomaniac visions of their moral superiority. Almeida Garrett and Alexandre Herculano tried to provide a solution, harmonising their country with its European context. The conclusion accentuates the uttermost victory of this harmonising vision, presenting the contemporary Portuguese culture as fully Europeanised and contrasting it with the doubts concerning European identity that may be observed in contemporary Poland.

Portuguese narrative fiction is plentiful of food and drink references, which vary in meaning and function accordingly to the historical context of production. The peripathetic Portuguese brought culinary knowledge from abroad mainly since the 16th century, merging cultural changes of food and drink with practices from their country of origin. This was a turning point in the history of Portuguese narrative fiction, for it made more present the concept of the "other" through consumption habits. An extremely short travel between 16th and 19th narrrative fiction examples intends to highlight some uses of food and drink as topoi in historical and cultural context, asserting the relevance of this resource to articulate identities and alterities.

The introduction sets out the methodological approach of this study, which combines book history and literary analysis with methods drawn from sociology, namely, network analysis, valuation studies, and the sociology of professions. It argues for a ‘pragmatics of poetry’ that takes seriously the more practical concerns that poets articulated in their verse and the inventive, and often conflicting, ways in which poets wrote about what it meant to write verse in the period. The introduction also acquaints readers unfamiliar with sixteenth-century Portuguese literature with the writers who will feature most prominently in this study. A concluding section considers how the figure of Orpheus transformed across a set of images and texts from the period concerned in order to illustrate the various issues discussed in the chapters that follow.
