Digital Library Network Based on the San Technology

The new millennium witnessed significant changes in the development of the National Library of Latvia (NLL). The last decade of the twentieth century was linked to the restoration of all the basic functions of a national library in independent Latvia, but its development over the following decade was determined by the creation of a new, contemporary library. The twenty-year debate on the necessity of a new library, conforming to Latvia's needs, generated discussion not only on the functions of the library, but also on the broader cultural context. The basic approach was clear – nothing would remain the same in the new library. The size of the library's traditional collection has not changed significantly, but the provision of digitally born information and electronic publications has expanded rapidly. From 2001 to 2008 the NLL developed a national competence-building function in library computerization projects. Deepening cooperation with research libraries and other educational and research institutions, as well as the establishment of the Research and Development group, which brought the vision of a digital future into the Library, have been very important for enshrining the authority of the NLL in the whole library network. The National Library holds an optimistic view of the coming decade, believing that the new building will be completed, that the National Digital Library ‘Letonica’ will be created with resources in TEL, Europeana and the World Digital Library, and that the Library will be a valuable interactive centre of culture, education and research in the state.

Background Lund University Library purchased and implemented a new discovery system in the end of 2011 and the beginning of 2012. Historically there has been no collaboration between the digital library unit and the pedagogical unit at the University Library. The conditions for the implementation were quite difficult; an extremely tight time frame, changes of the member of staff, high demands from the library network, a bad relation with current system supplier, a dependency of the current system and its functionalities. What to do? In order to reach trustworthiness and to make sure that we have a learning perspective in all the processes we initiated a close collaboration between the digital unit and the pedagogical unit and formed an implementation group. We also initiated a close and active collaboration between the implementation group and an expert group formed by members from the faculty libraries i.e. the super user group. Activities We had four workshops about pedagogical issues regarding discovery systems. The workshops turned out to be a forum for a dialogue between the digital library, the pedagogical unit and the teacher librarians. They resulted in an action plan which was integrated in the implementation process. We also invited colleagues to informal discussions about the pedagogical use of the discovery system. We encouraged all teaching librarians to share their educational materials on our intranet. Conclusion We found the collaborative strategy fruitful and not only did it result in a closer collaboration between the digital library and the pedagogical unit but also with the library network. Due to several reasons we conducted a new tender of a discovery system during 2012. The tender resulted in a new system with a different supplier. In the implementation started in the autumn 2012, we implemented the experiences and learnings gained by our previous implementation.

Digital libraries have been widely applied in educational institutions in Indonesia as a complement conventional libraries. The purpose of this research is to know division computer network access at the Adisutjipto Intitute of Technology (STTA) library. The research method used is a qualitative method using Prepare Plan Design Implement Operate and Optimize (PPDIOO). The result research is that people who have internet access will not be able to enter the digital library network. Computer network users who want to access digital libraries must log into the computer network that provides digital books in the library using a Virtual Local Area Network (VLAN). Making this VLAN requires a computer network infrastructure in the form of a Local Area Network (LAN) and computer network equipment in the form of a switch that can be used to configure multiple VLANs in a LAN. Some of the existing services in the library are placed on one VLAN and the digital library is placed on another VLAN. From the test results, it can be seen that between computers that provide services in the library on VLAN 2 cannot communicate via the connecting network to VLAN 1 where the digital library with website based services will be located. This is evidenced by the ping command which generates request time out information. VLANs network in the STTA library have been able to provide support for plans to improve services to members and academicians in the form of a digital library.
