Medical analysis laboratory must establish its own reference intervals depending on the facilities they are working with, the working substances and protocols. These reference intervals must be obtained depending on age groups in order to accurately interpret the results of the analyzes performed. The study is a retrospective one using 3217 data from the electronic archive of the S.C. Vladutiu&Garabedian S.R.L. Clinic in Medias. Total serum calcium was determined by the colorimetric method on the Konelab analyzer. Processing of the collected data was done using the Hoffmann method, considering 5% up to 95% of the values in the database, the values being randomly selected. For comparison, data from the literature was used. In children under 1 year old, it was not possible to calculate the reference intervals since data was insufficient. In the other age groups, reference intervals obtained in the current study were similar to the studied literature. Reference intervals established for calcium can provide important guidance for the reasonable supplementation of this essential element in children.

Abstract Paper-based microfluidics has been widely used in chemical and medical analysis applications. In the conventional paper-based microfluidic approach, fluid is propagating inside the porous structure, and the flow direction of the fluid propagation is usually controlled with the pre-defined hydrophobic barrier (e.g. wax). However, the fluid propagation velocity inside the paper-based microfluidic devices largely depends on the material properties of paper and fluid, the relative control method is rarely reported. In this study, a fluid propagation velocity control method is proposed for paper-based microfluidics: hydrophobic pillar arrays with different configurations were deposited in the microchannels in paper-based microfluidics for flow speed control, result indicates the deposited hydrophobic pillar arrays can effectively slow down the fluid propagation at different levels and can be used to passively control the fluid propagation inside microchannels for paper-based microfluidics. For the demonstration of the proposed fluid control methods, a paper-based microfluidic device for nitrite test in water was also fabricated. The proposed fluid control method for paper-based microfluidics may have significant importance for applications that involve sequenced reactions and more actuate fluid manipulation.

Abstract Background In 2007 Uruguay began a reform in the health sector towards the construction of a National Integrated Health System (SNIS), based on public insurance with private and public provision. The main objective of the reform was to universalize access to health services. Methods Data comes from the first National Health Survey conducted in 2014 and available since 2016. Concentration indices are calculated for different indicators of use and access to medical services, for the population 18 years of age and older, and for different subgroups (age, sex, region and type of coverage). The indices are decomposed into need and non-need variables and the contribution of each of them to total inequality is analyzed. Horizontal inequity is calculated. Results Results show pro-rich inequality for medical consultations, medical analysis, medication use and non-access due to costs. Type of health coverage is the variable that explains most of the inequality: private coverage is pro-rich while public coverage is pro-poor. Income does not appear as significant to explain inequality, except for access issues. From the population subgroups’ analysis, there is no evidence of inequality for the group of 60 years old or more. On the other hand, studies such as Pap Smear and prostate, which may be associated with preventive studies,, shows pro-rich inequality and, in both cases, the main contribution is given by income. Conclusions The analysis of health inequity shows pro-rich inequity in medical consultations, medical analysis, medication use and lack of access due to costs. The type of health coverage explains these inequalities; in particular, private coverage is pro-rich. These results suggest that the type of health coverage are capturing the income factor, since higher income individuals will be more likely to be treated in the private system.
