We are delighted to respond to the criticisms of Drs McDonagh and Lightner of our review article on phototherapy (Pediatrics 65:740, 1980). 1 and 2. Dr McDonagh correctly notes that he did not administer rose bengal but rather hemato-porphyrin to Gunn rats in showing that a singlet oxygen photosensitizer could dramatically accelerate the photocatabolism of bilirubin in these animals.1 However, it is not appropriate for McDonagh to deny that he proposed that generation and addition of singlet oxygen is a major mechanism of phototherapy, as the experiment cited above was used as evidence for this view.

Novel polymeric photosensitizers for singlet oxygen production in water are described. The polymers contain rose bengal (4,5,6,7-tetrachloro-2',4',5',7'tetraiodo-fluorescein) chromophores covalently attached to the polymer chain. The quantum yields of singlet oxygen formation and photooxidation of phenol in water have been determined. The methods of separation of photosensitizer from the reactants after completion of reaction have been established.

Rose Bengal was immobilized on a vinylimidazolium functionalized support, and the heterogeneous organic photosensitizer thus prepared was applied for photooxidation reactions of organic molecules under continuous-flow conditions. Substituents of the cation part of the support were found to play a crucial role in determining the lifetime of the catalyst. More than 11 days continuous operation of a flow reaction was achieved.
