The Impact

South African psychologists have identified the improvement of quality of life as a major goal of the 1980s. This paper reviews the impact of satisfaction with personal aspects of life on perceived well-being. The results of an exploratory study of South African quality of life conducted among 5 587 individuals of all population groups are discussed. Findings confirm the salience of the personal domain and the positive influence of personal satisfactions on subjective well-being. However, results of regression analyses suggest that the relative contribution of satisfactions in the personal domain is too low to play a major role in improving the quality of life of all South Africans in the longer term.

The supply or lack of services impacts on people's quality of life, and so the Constitution of South Africa and other strategy documents emphasise the provision of services to all South African citizens irrespective of colour or creed. The services are vast and the responsibility for provision is divided between national, provincial and local authorities. This paper focuses on the delivery of services whose responsibility and accountability lies with the local municipalities, including: water; electricity; sanitation and refuse removal. The paper also explores the background to the recent unrest in the country with a focus on Dipaleseng Municipality, looking at its socio-economic situation, and challenges which include poverty, economic stability and provision of basic services. Sources of data include the South African media, journal articles, relevant documents, websites and databases.

This study examined health-related quality of life among a sample of South African women diagnosed with endometriosis. Semistructured interviews were conducted with 25 participants in South Africa. Participants discussed the ways in which endometriosis affected their health-related quality of life. A total of 10 categories emerged from the data, namely, (1) medical factors, (2) physical functioning, (3) psychological functioning, (4) sexual functioning, (5) reproductive functioning, (6) interpersonal functioning, (7) occupational functioning, (8) information and knowledge, (9) healthcare and medical treatment and (10) financial impact and considerations. Each category was described and compared with findings from other health-related quality of life research in women with endometriosis.
