The use of aluminium alloy instead of steel for the structural components of a 32 ton articulated lorry has been examined. The probable manufacturing difficulties have been assessed and shown to be minimal. The savings in weight possible by using aluminium have been calculated from a structural analysis of the cab, tractor chassis and trailer and from this and an assessment of the manufacturing processes the extra cost of manufacturing in aluminium has been determined. A typical case study shows that this extra cost can be easily recovered by utilising the increased load capacity of the vehicle during the first few years of its life.

Additive Fertigungsverfahren zeichnen sich durch große Gestaltungsfreiheit aus, welche die Herstellung komplexer Bauteile ermöglicht. Angesichts hoher Fertigungskosten ist die Prozesssicherheit nachgeordneter Bearbeitungsschritte (wie zum Beispiel die Gewindefertigung) von großer Bedeutung. Der Artikel stellt die Ergebnisse einer Untersuchungsreihe vor, die unterschiedliche Ansätze der Gewindefertigung in Bauteilen aus Stahl behandelt, die mittels Selektivem Laserschmelzverfahren gefertigt wurden.   Additive manufacturing processes are characterized by a high degree of design freedom to enablet the production of complex components. To reduce manufacturing costs, the process reliability of downstream processing steps (e. g. thread production) is of great importance. This article presents the results of a series of investigations dealing with different approaches to thread production in steel components manufactured by selective laser melting

Die additive Fertigung ermöglicht komplexe Geometrien und individualisierte Bauteile. Die hohen Material- und Fertigungskosten können ein Hindernis für einen wirtschaftlichen Einsatz sein. In der hybriden additiven Fertigung werden die Vorteile konventioneller sowie additiver Fertigungsverfahren kombiniert. Für eine weitere Steigerung der Wirtschaftlichkeit und Effizienz werden nichtwertschöpfende Schritte der Prozesskette identifiziert und Automatisierungsansätze entwickelt.   Additive manufacturing enables complex geometries and individualized components. However, high material and manufacturing costs can be a hindrance for economical use. Hybrid additive manufacturing combines the advantages of conventional with additive manufacturing processes. For a further increase in profitability and efficiency, non-value-adding steps in the process chain are identified and automation approaches developed.

Using a collection of surplus German military objects composed of woven paper from World War I in the Smithsonian National Museum of American History as a case study, this article questions the value of keeping objects that no longer support the current mission statement of a museum, or if they ever did. It does not aim to answer definitively such a tough question, as a multitude of factors and stakeholders are involved with such a decision, but rather it seeks to bring this subject matter to the fore of collections and curatorial management, to explore best practices, and to examine if such best practices are being readily followed. The objects’ history, manufacturing processes, materiality, conservation concerns, and significance are explored in an effort to build context around the objects and to determine the appropriateness of their occupancy within the museum.

Nowadays, industries face very strong challenges because of the high competitiveness between them. In fact, they are required to offer products with high quality and minimum cost in the minimum time. Since most of the characteristics and costs of the product and its manufacturing process are fixed in the design phase, this paper is focused on this strategic phase. Indeed, a new integrated product design approach is presented. It considers at the same time design requirements, materials characteristics, manufacturing parameters and the assembly process specifications. The developed approach is quantitative. Actually, the decision making is based on all its steps on objective and subjective indicators. To validate the integrated approach, a case study on the Schrader Robot is developed. This application allows to choose the most appropriate materials, manufacturing processes and assembly solution of its different components.

Process capability indices (PCIs) have always been used to improve the quality of products and services. Traditional PCIs are based on the assumption that the data obtained from the quality characteristic (QC) under consideration are normally distributed. However, most data on manufacturing processes violate this assumption. Furthermore, the products and services of the manufacturing industry usually have more than one QC; these QCs are functionally correlated and, thus, should be evaluated together to evaluate the overall quality of a product. This study investigates and extends the existing multivariate non-normal PCIs. First, a multivariate non-normal PCI model from the literature is modeled and validated. An algorithm to generate non-normal multivariate data with the desired correlations is also modeled. Then, this model is extended using two different approaches that depend on the well-known Box–Cox and Johnson transformations. The skewness reduction is further improved by applying heuristics algorithms. These two approaches outperform the investigated model from the literature because they can provide more precise results regardless of the skewness type. The comparison is made based on the generated data and a case study from the literature.
