The current state of economic development foreseen an increasing production processes efficiency and determines the demand for energy resources. At the same time, the global use of traditional energy sources is steadily growing and currently it is still dominant. Considering the empirical arguments regarding environmental degradation and problems related to climate change, the development and implementation of smart and safe energy technologies, such as the Smart Grid, is relevant. Smart and secure power grids today are seen as technologies that facilitate the transition of the energy system supply from traditional electrical networks to more sustainable and environmentally friendly operations. The article deals with theoretical and methodological approaches that reveal the essence of the Smart Grid concept, and analyzes the main areas of investment in such technologies. It is underlined that to ensure energy security and environmental sustainability of energy supply sector the generation of electric power should be based on the use of renewable energy sources. The long-run sustainability of energy sector in climate change conditions is guaranteed by forming deep links between renewable energy generation and Smart Grid technologies. The paper discusses the main factors which may influence the Smart Grid technology development. The investments in renewable energy are named to be the most important factor of Smart Grid technology development. The lack of investments is considered to be an important factor of poor energy efficiency in developing economies. In addition, the article focuses on European experience regarding the implementation of smart and safe energy systems based on renewable energy sources. It is underlined the best EU counties experience for Smart Grid technology development based on investments in renewable energy sector. Key words: Smart Grid, renewable energy, economic process, power network, energy supply, efficiency, investment.

Day by day the non-renewable sources of power are getting depleted. Due to higher demands of energy the necessity of such sources is becoming more important in the field of electrical power according to the estimates of power sector the usage of renewable component has increased by 9% w.r.t to 2013. Even though non-renewable sources capacity increasing day by day the complexity of the power system network increasing which result in mismatch between voltage and power in electrical network. By using smart grid technology, we can minimize the unequal effect of voltage and power in the domain of renewable energy source. Smart grid technology uses digital transformation of electrical parameter to central coordination center at high sample rate, which uses effective and reliable operation in managing energy demand of renewable energy sources

Electrical grid is no longer featured in a conventional way nowadays. Today, the growing of new technologies, primarily the distributed renewable energy sources and electric vehicles, has been integrated with the distribution networks causing several technical issues. As a result, the penetration of the renewable energy sources can be limited by the utility companies. Smart grid has been emerged as one of the solutions to the technical issues, hence allowing the usage of renewable and improving the energy efficiency of the electrical grid. The challenge is to develop an intelligent management system to maintain the balance between the generation and demand. This task can be performed by using energy storage system. As part of the smart grid, the deployment of energy storage system plays a critical role in stabilizing the voltage and frequency of the networks with renewable energy sources and electric vehicles. This book chapter illustrates the revolution and the roles of energy storage for improving the network performance.

An optimal utilization of smart grid connected hybrid renewable energy sources is proposed in this paper. The hybrid technique is the combination of recurrent neural network and adaptive whale optimization algorithm plus tabu search, called AWOTS. The main objective is the RES optimum operation for decreasing the electricity production cost by hourly day-ahead and real time scheduling. Here, the load demands are predicted using AWOTS to develop the correct control signals based on power difference between source and load side. Adaptive whale optimization algorithm searching behaviour is adjusted by tabu search. The proposed technique is executed in the MATLAB/Simulink working platform. To test the performance of the proposed method, the load demand for the 24-hour time period is demonstrated. By then the power generated in the sources, such as photovoltaic, wind turbine, micro turbine and battery by the proposed technique, is analyzed and compared with existing techniques, such as genetic algorithm, particle swarm optimization and whale optimization algorithm. Furthermore, the state of charge of the battery for the 24-hour period is compared with existing techniques. Likewise, the cost of the system is compared and error in the sources also compared. The comparison results affirm that the proposed technique has less computational time (35.001703) than the existing techniques. Moreover, the proposed method is cost-effective power production of smart grid and effective utilization of renewable energy sources without wasting the available energy.
