The entry of electrode material into an immobile spark discharge is studied. The ablation time tb of several electrode materials having a wide range of thermal and physical properties was measured in both hydrogen and argon atmospheres using spectrophotometric techniques. Gas pressure, kind of gas, and current magnitude had virtually no effect on tb over the range of parameters studied. While cathode ablation was always present, anode ablation was found to be immeasurably small. Generally experimental and theoretical values of ablation time agreed, the latter being calculated from the hot-spot model for ablation.
