We analyze the diffractive [Formula: see text] production and final jet kinematics in polarized deep-inelastic lp scattering at [Formula: see text] GeV. We show that this reaction can be used in the new spectrometer of the COMPASS collaboration at CERN to study the quark–pomeron coupling structure.

A spin-averaged two-particle distribution cross section for the process pp → pp + X is derived. The triple-Pomeranchukon couplings gp(t1) and gp(t2) enter as factors in the distribution. From a colliding-beam viewpoint, the two exchanged Pomerons, with masses (−t1)1/2 and (−t2)1/2, and described by trajectories αp(t1) and αp(t2), respectively, annihilate each other to form the hadron system. The distribution exhibits factorization into a pair of one-particle distributions. A t-dependent expression is given for the triple-Pomeron coupling which allows an estimate of the Pomeron–Pomeron total cross section.
