AbstractFor the first time, DNA sequence data were obtained for three species of Trichostrongylus from Russia. Internal transcribed spacer (ITS-2) of ribosomal DNA was sequenced for T. axei, T. colubriformis and T. probolurus from sheep from the Moscow region. ITS-2 rDNA length was estimated as 238 nucleotides for T. colubriformis and T. probolurus and 237 nucleotides for T. axei. The G+C content of the ITS-2 sequences of T. colubriformis, T. axei and T. probolurus were 31 %, 32 % and 34 % respectively. The level of interspecific differences in ITS-2 of rDNA of T. axei, T. probolurus and T. colubriformis ranged from 3 to 4 %. The ITS-2 sequences from the Russian specimens were compared with those of T. axei, T. probolurus and T. colubriformis from Australia and Germany. Intraspecific variation ranged from 0 % in T. colubriformis to 3.0 % in T. axei.

A new orchid species, Liparis wenshanensis, discovered in Yunnan, China is described and illustrated in this study based on morphological and molecular analyses. A detailed comparison between the newly discovered orchid and other members of the genus, Liparis, was conducted. The new plant is characterized by the combination of the following features: a long rachis with 45 to 55 flowers; white sepals, petals and column; a greenish lip with a purplish center; strongly recurved and revolute dorsal sepals and petals; strongly recurved, oblong lateral sepals; a cordate lip that is strongly deflexed below the middle, with a two-lobed apex and a two-lobed callus at the base; an arcuate column with a lamella extending along the center almost to the stigma, and with a pair of broad wings toward the apex. These features distinguish the new orchid from all other known species of Liparis. We proceeded to a phylogenetic analysis to ascertain the systematic position of this enigmatic species. Molecular analyses based on nuclear ribosomal ITS and plastid matK DNA sequence data supports the recognition of L. wenshanensis as a distinct species.

Lichens consist of a fungal component that associates with either a green alga or cynobacterium, resulting in diverse morphologies. Resynthesis experiments of isolated myco- and photobionts, as well as internal transcribed spacer (ITS) rDNA phylogenies, suggest that the notoriously dissimilar photomorphs of Lobaria fendleri (Tuck. ex Mont.) Lindau and Lobaria amplissima (Scop.) Forss. both have a single mycobiont, which can simultaneously lichenize two unrelated photobionts, a eukaryote and a prokaryote. In the phylogenetic analyses, the genera Sticta and Durietzia appear monophyletic; whereas Lobaria and Pseudocyphellaria are both nonmonophyletic. Furthermore, the phylogenetic relationships of Durietzia, Lobarina, and Sticta relative to Lobaria and Pseudocyphellaria are in need of re-evaluation.Key words: internal transcribed spacer (ITS), photosymbiodeme, phylogeny, lichen-forming fungi, Lobaria amplissima, Lobaria fendleri, Pseudocyphellaria, Sticta.

Background and aims – The aim of this study is the continuation of an ongoing survey of Hymenochaetaceae (Basidiomycota, Hymenochaetales) from the lower Guinean sub-region in Central Africa. In this frame, a new species of Phylloporia is described from Gabon, based on morphological, ecological and phylogenetic data. Methods – The species is described using morphological methods, and ecological data. DNA-based phylogenetic analysis are also used to search for affinities.Key results – A new species of Phylloporia, P. rinoreae, is described based on specimens collected on living twigs of a shrubby Rinorea species (Violaceae), occurring in the Guineo-Congolian rain forest. Phylogenetic inferences using DNA sequence data from partial nuc 28S (region including the D1/D2/D3 domains) resolved this species as a distinct clade within the Phylloporia lineage. An identification key to the species reported from the Guineo-Congolian phytochorion is provided. Conclusion – Phylloporia rinoreae is the seventh species of the genus described from and so far only known from Gabon in the Lower Guinean phytogeographical sub-region.
