Little is known about the mandrill Mandrillus sphinx in the wild. It is an elusive primate and thus difficult to study in its rain-forest habitat in equatorial Africa. As human pressure on its habitat grows it has become increasingly urgent to discover more about the species so that appropriate conservation measures can be planned. The author made a 15-month study of the mandrill in Gabon and discovered that it was not as widely distributed as had been believed. Although it is threatened by hunting pressure and habitat disruption, populations still remain and five reserves protect some of these.

SummaryA 25-year-old female mandrill (Mandrillus sphinx - a primate and part of the Old World monkey group) was presented with a mildly comminuted, diaphyseal, radial fracture associated with a transverse ulnar fracture. Minimally invasive plate osteosynthesis techniques were used to achieve fixation of both the radial and the ulnar fractures. First, closed fracture reduction was achieved with a distraction frame consisting of a motorized circular external skeletal fixator. Next, dual percutaneous radio-ulnar plating was performed using a 2.7 limited-contact dynamic compression plate on the cranial aspect of the radius and two stacked 2.0/2.7 veterinary cut-to-length plates on the lateral aspect of the ulna. Uncomplicated recovery was observed with a complete return to normal activity three months postoperatively. Fracture healing was documented at four weeks, clinical union at 14 weeks, and callus remodelling at 24 weeks postoperatively. This report demonstrates the feasibility of minimally invasive plate osteosynthesis in a primate and shows the adaptability of this technique across mammalian species.

Although trichromatic color vision has been extensively studied as it grants significant advantages for Old World primates, it is unknown which selective pressures were behind trait’s evolution. The leading hypothesis would be that colour vision arose as a foraging adaptation because it allowed individuals to spot food more efficiently. To test this, we exposed three chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes), five gorillas (Gorilla gorilla) and three mandrills (Mandrillus sphinx) to colour cardboard plates to assess if colours related to diet were the most preferred. Experimental setting was divided in two phases. During the first one, animals were provided with colour cardboard plates of only one colour per data collection session. The order of colour presentation was randomly determined: white, black, yellow, green and red. In phase two, primates were simultaneously provided with cardboard plates of all colours. Behavioural interactions with plates were measured using a one-zero group focal sampling (10 s sampling intervals and 20 m observation periods). Results showed that when animals were exposed to only one colour at a time, they exhibited different colour preferences depending on the species considered. Chimpanzees preferred red and yellow, the colours linked to fruits, while gorillas selected red and white. Mandrills exhibited fewer differences between colours preference, being red the most selected. Furthermore, when all colours were simultaneously provided, individuals chose colours related to diet over black and white. Although there were clear individual differences, our results support that trichromatic color vision is an advantage in detecting and selecting red items. In the wild, it could be important in the detection of reddish fruits and leaves.

Several species mitigate relationships according to their conspecifics' parasite status. Yet, this defence strategy comes with the costs of depriving individuals from valuable social bonds. Animals therefore face a trade-off between the costs of pathogen exposure and the benefits of social relationships. According to the models of social evolution, social bonds are highly kin-biased. However, whether kinship mitigates social avoidance of contagious individuals has never been tested so far. Here, we build on previous research to demonstrate that mandrills ( Mandrillus sphinx ) modulate social avoidance of contagious individuals according to kinship: individuals do not avoid grooming their close maternal kin when contagious (parasitized with oro-faecally transmitted protozoa), although they do for more distant or non-kin. While individuals' parasite status has seldom been considered as a trait impacting social relationships in animals, this study goes a step beyond by showing that kinship balances the effect of health status on social behaviour in a non-human primate.
