Rehabilitation of sewer networks becomes an essential element in maintaining the entire sewage system in running order by minimizing the operating costs, increasing the life of pipelines, increasing the self-sustainability of the system using advanced automation, control and analysis tools. In order to maximize the life of pipelines and eliminate damaging parallel laid utility networks, it is necessary to correctly choose the methods of networks rehabilitation based on the experience and analysis of the existing ones. The main methods of repair and rehabilitation of pipelines are considered and classified. The necessity for system approach to the reconstruction is noted. A block diagram has been developed that provides for choosing a reconstruction method depending on the nature of the pipeline destruction and based on the telemetry inspection. Examples of its application in the existing structures are given. The article is written on the basis of an analysis of the technical publications and experience of operating and designing sewer networks in St. Petersburg.

Minimum numbers of yeasts isolated from the Saskatchewan River in the summers of 1964 and 1965 ranged from 400 to 500 cells/liter upstream from the city of Saskatoon, to 4600 cells/liter immediately downstream. In the summer of 1968, a period of extremely low water, the counts were 150 cells/liter upstream from the city and 30 000 cells/liter downstream.Proton magnetic resonance spectra of the mannose-containing polysaccharides from representative cultures of the different species isolated were used as an aid in classification. Most of the species were asporogenous, and included representatives of the genera Candida, Trichosporon, Rhodotorula, Torulopsis, and Cryptococcus. Some species of Pichia, Saccharomyces, and Debaryomyces were isolated. The yeasts were mostly introduced into the river with the effluent from the Saskatoon sewage system.

AbstractScientific publications and newsfeeds recently focused on flushable wet wipes and their role in sewage system blockages. It is stated that although products are marked as flushable, they do not disintegrate after being disposed of via the toilet. In this work it is shown that wetlaid hydroentangled wet wipes lose their initially good dispersive properties during their storage in wet condition. As a consequence, we are suggesting to add tests after defined times of wet storage when assessing the flushability of wet wipes. Loss of dispersibility is found for both, wet wipes from industrial production and wipes produced on pilot facilities. We found it quite surprising that the wet wipes’ dispersibility is deteriorating after storage in exactly the same liquid they are dispersed in, i.e. water. This is probably why the effect of wet storage has not been investigated earlier. It is demonstrated that the deteriorating dispersibility of these wipes is linked to the used type of short cellulosic fibres — only wipes containing unbleached softwood pulp as short fibre component were preserving good dispersibility during wet storage. Possible mechanisms that might be responsible are discussed, e.g. long term fiber swelling causing a tightening of the fiber network, or surface interdiffusion.

Using SWMM 5.1 (Storm Water Management Model) software, a model of sewage system functioning in Głogów was developed. It was calibrated based on the results of field studies from the years 2011– 14, while the properness of its activity was verified for the results of measurements carried out during the period 1998–2000. The verification of the model showed acceptable discrepancies between the measured and simulated values of channel depth. Factors which caused differences were indicated and, on the basis of this, conclusions pertaining to further studies were formulated.
