In this paper, low temperature, economical sol–gel combustion method was adopted to synthesize wollastonite ceramic. Calcium nitrate tetrahydrate and tetraethyl orthosilicate were taken as source for Ca and Si, while citric acid and nitric acid were used as chelating/combustion agents. The yielded powder calcined at 600[Formula: see text]C for 4 h was characterized by FTIR, XRD and SEM techniques. Results showed that the citrate combustion method was the most efficient method to prepare wollastonite at low temperature. Moreover, in vitro bioactivity test performed in simulated body fluid (SBF) showed good bioactivity of synthesized wollastonite ceramics.

A green silicon-containing carbon black pigment was synthesized via a sol-geo combustion technique using TEOS and black ink as raw materials. The obtained black pigment was characterized by XRD, TEM and UV-vis absorption spectrophotometer. The results show that the silicon coated with carbon black pigment can be formed at pH ≥ 2 and the black pigment does not change its color after calcinations at 1300 °C in air implying the carbon black is coated completely with SiO2. When pH is 4, the properties of as-prepared sample are similar with the conventional high-temperature pigment. XRD and SEM further confirm that silicon coats with carbon black fully. The silica/ carbon black pigment may represent an opportunity for the applications in the decoration of the high-temperature ceramic.

Abstract Calcium and hafnium co-doped barium titanate could be used as a replacement for lead zirconate titanate, which is a lead-based ferroelectric material. Solid state reaction accompanied by the usual sintering technique is the classical ceramic-processing method, which demands a lot of time and effort. The present work aims to make the process a lot easier and quicker by employing a modified sol-gel combustion technique to synthesize polycrystalline Ba0.85Ca0.15Ti(1-x)HfxO3 (x=0.00, 0.05, 0.10, 0.15) electro ceramics . The molar ration is fixed at 1:1 for metal and citric acid at pH ~ 1. It was found that Ba0.85Ca0.15Ti(1-x)HfxO3 (where x=0.00, 0.05, 0.10, 0.15) crystallizes completely at around 1000 °C which is much lower than traditional methods. The structure supposedly displays a tetragonal symmetry with the P4mm space group as confirmed through x-ray diffraction (XRD) and Raman spectroscopy.
