AbstractJack D. Dunitz (1923–2021) was Professor of Chemical Crystallography at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, Zurich. He received his degrees from Glasgow University, was at the ETH Zurich since 1957, and retired in 1990. His research interests included crystal structure analysis as a tool for solving chemical problems, polymorphism, solid state reactions, and a broad area of structural variations during chemical events under the umbrella term of structure correlation.

The conference Robotics: Science and Systems was held at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH) in Zurich Switzerland, from June 25 to June 28, 2008. More than 280 international researchers attended this single track conference to learn about the most exciting robotics research and most advanced robotic systems. The program committee, led by sixteen area chairs, selected 40 papers out of 163 submissions. The program also included seven invited talks and two early career spotlight presentations. The plenary presentations were complemented by thirteen workshops.

Application Fields

The application of functionally graded materials (FGM) principles is widespread in Europe, despite the lack of national or European programs coordinating the efforts of the individual institutions and researchers. In the following article, the status of research in Europe will be outlined by examples of research projects from various application fields. More detailed information on European FGM research is available from the proceedings of the FGM '94 symposium held in October 1994 in Lausanne, Switzerland. The symposium was organized by B. Ilschner through the Materials Department of the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology of Lausanne.
