It is distinguished from other congeners by the following combination of characters: second dorsal-fin rays I, 18–19; anal-fin rays I, 19; pectoral-fin rays 21–22; gill rakers 5–6 + 13–15; head length 25.1–26.4% SL; eye diameter 8.6–10.0% SL; pelvic-fin length 15.2–16.1% SL; and a well-developed yellow stripe extending from behind upper part of eye to beneath first dorsal fin.

The Indo-West Pacific alpheid shrimp genus Athanopsis Coutière, 1897 is briefly reviewed. Athanopsis platyrhynchusCoutière, 1897, the type species, is reassessed using Coutière’s illustrations and morphological notes scattered throughouthis monograph of the family Alpheidae (Coutière 1899). Athanopsis brevirostris Banner & Banner, 1981, originally de-scribed on the basis of a single immature specimen missing both chelipeds, is reported and illustrated based on fresh ma-terial from Madagascar and southern Japan. Athanopsis gotoi sp. nov. is described based on two fresh specimens fromsouthern Japan, both found associated with thalassematid echiurans, and an additional, older museum specimen from In-donesia. The colour patterns of A. brevirostris, A. gotoi sp. nov., A. saurus Anker, 2011, A. rubricinctuta Berggren, 1991,and A. australis Banner & Banner, 1982, are contrasted to facilitate their identification in the field. A morphology and colour based key to all presently known species of Athanopsis is also provided.

It is the second species of Xenuraega Tattersall, 1909, and extends the known range of the genus from North Atlantic to the northern Pacific Ocean. The species is characterized by the posteriorly narrowed pleotelson, and both uropodal rami being elongate and provided with a mass of long plumose setae. Xenuraega bythionekta sp. nov. is known only from the type locality, Kagoshima Prefecture, southern Japan at a depth of 1178–1179 m.

A new hydromedusa belonging to the order Limnomedusae is reported from the Ryukyu Archipelago, southern Japan. Olindias deigosp. nov. can be distinguished from other Olindiidae species by the number and color of tentacles. Mature medusae of O. deigosp. nov. were collected to observe the life history, including polyp (hydroid) and medusa formation. A comparative table of the primary diagnostic characters of the genus is provided.

Notes are provided for six microcaddisfly species (Trichoptera, Hydroptilidae) in the Japanese fauna. One is a new species, Hydroptila nago Ito sp. nov., described from southern Japan. The second and third, Hydroptila dorsoprocessuata Botosaneanu 1993, previously known from eastern Russia, and Hydroptila introspinata Zhou and Sun 2009, known from northeastern China and Korea, are recorded from Japan for the first time and redescribed. A fourth, Hydroptila parapiculata Yang and Xue 1994, is known from central and southeastern China and central Japan; the male is redescribed. By synonymizing Ugandatrichia shinshiroensis Ito et al. 2018, described from central Japan, with a Chinese species, Allotrichia rhynchophyllum Zhou et al. 2016, we record the genus Allotrichia McLachlan from Japan for the first time. For a sixth species, Stactobia distinguenda Nozaki and Botosaneanu 1996, previously known in Japan from the male only, the larva and its case are described.
