Many unhealthy behaviors often begin during adolescence and represent major public health challenges. Substance abuse has a major impact on individuals, families, and communities, as its effects are cumulative, contributing to costly social, physical, and mental health problems. Psycho-education refers to the method of educating individuals who are faced with substance abuse disorders, co-occurring mental health disorders. It provides a more thorough understanding of the nature of addiction and the disease model.

Objective: This review aimed to understand the broader community’s attitudes toward ADHD, which could facilitate public health interventions to improve outcomes for individuals with ADHD. Methods: A standardized protocol identified peer-reviewed studies focusing on attitudes of broader community samples, published from January 2014 to February 2020 (inclusive). Results: A total of 1,318 articles were screened and 10 studies were included, examining attitudes of broader community samples from Australia, Sweden, Germany, Finland, Korea, Indonesia, and the United States. Findings revealed that broader community samples displayed varying degrees of ADHD-related knowledge, negative attitudes (that ADHD is over-diagnosed; that pharmacological treatment is not acceptable; that those with ADHD are more likely to exhibit poor behavior), and a desire for maintaining social distance from individuals with ADHD. Conclusion: Findings suggest that community attitudes are generally negative toward those with ADHD. Targeted mental health literacy could provide an important avenue for improving the broader community’s attitudes toward those with ADHD.

Enormous progress has been made in recognizing the scope of mental health problems for children around the world, and in developing the theoretical framework needed to address decreasing this burden in a systematic fashion. Technological advances in neuroimaging, genetics, and computational biology are providing the tools to start describing the biological processes underlying the complex course of development, and have renewed appreciation of the role of the environment in determining how a genetic heritage is expressed. However, rapid technological change is also altering the environment of children and their families at an unprecedented rate, and what kinds of challenges to public health these changes may present is not yet fully understood. What is becoming clear is that as technological advances increase the range of available health care treatments, along with the potential cost, the choices for societies between spending limited resources on treatment or prevention will have to become increasingly deliberate. A substantial body of work has demonstrated that prevention in mental health can be effective, but those who would benefit the most from preventive interventions are often not those with the political or economic resources to make them a priority. While the potential interventions to prevent mental health disorders in children are constrained by the knowledge and resources available, what is actually done depends upon the social and political values of individual communities and nations. It is to be hoped that as our understanding of these disorders grows, public policies to prevent the development of mental health disorders in children will become as commonplace a responsibility for modern societies as the provision of clean drinking water.

Abstract Background To review the literature on economic evaluations of public health interventions targeting prevention of mental health problems and suicide, to support evidence based societal resource allocation. Methods A systematic review of economic evaluations within mental health and suicide prevention was conducted including studies published between 2000 and 2018. The studies were identified through Medline, PsychINFO, Web of Science. The quality of relevant studies and the transferability of their results were assessed using a criterion set out by the Swedish Agency for Health Technology Assessment. Results Nineteen studies of moderate to high quality were included in this review, which evaluated 18 interventions in mental health and 4 interventions in suicide prevention. Fourteen (63%) of all interventions were cost-effective. None of the studies that evaluated suicide prevention was of high quality. The interventions largely focused on psychological interventions at school, the workplace and within elderly care as well as screening and brief interventions in primary care. Nine studies (around 50% of included articles) had a high potential for transferability to the Swedish context. Conclusions Public health interventions aiming to improve mental health have a high potential to be economically beneficial to society, but high-quality evidence on the cost-effectiveness of suicide prevention is limited. Key messages Public health interventions aiming to improve mental health have a high potential to be economically beneficial to society. IntroductionThe burden of mental health disorders has a wide societal impact affecting primarily individuals and their significant others. Mental health interventions produce costs and benefits in the health care sector but can also lead to costs and benefits in non-healthcare sectors, also known as inter-sectoral costs and benefits (ICBs). The aim of this study was to develop an internationally applicable list of ICBs in the educational sector resulting from mental health interventions and to facilitate the inclusion of ICBs in economic evaluations across the European Union (EU) by prioritizing important ICBs.MethodsSome ICBs of mental health interventions were identified in earlier research, which were used as a basis for this study. Additional data was collected via a systematic literature search of PubMed and a grey literature search carried out in six EU countries. In order to validate the international applicability of the list and prioritize the ICBs, a survey was conducted with the international group of experts from the educational sector. The outcomes of the expert survey were used to create the condensed list containing the most important ICBs.ResultsThe literature search allowed identifying additional ICBs and creating a comprehensive list of items. In order to improve its usability, a multi-dimensional list was constructed distinguishing between tangible (i.e. special education) and intangible items (i.e. cognitive deficits). Based on the expert survey, the international applicability of the list was validated and the most important ICBs from the economic perspective were determined.ConclusionsMental health interventions can affect a large number of educational facilities. The list of ICBs developed in this study could be used to select relevant educational facilities for economic evaluations of specific mental health disorders. Further research is needed to define, measure, and valuate the identified ICBs in order to facilitate the practical application of the list in economic evaluations.
