This paper presents the results of ultrasonic and eddy-current measurements of the characteristics of austenitic stainless steel AISI 321 under fatigue failure. The effect of the strain amplitude on the intensity of changes in elastic and magnetic properties is studied. The use of a combination of eddy current and ultrasonic measurements makes it possible to assess the state of steel AISI 321 under fatigue failure is shown. The technique for measuring ultrasonic parameters described in this paper allows us to register changes in the structural state of a material under fatigue failure long before the crack is formed. The eddy current method is used to determine the volume fraction of martensite with ferromagnetic properties. An algorithm is proposed for estimating the number of loading cycles and the operating time of metastable austenitic steel AISI 321 based on the data of ultrasonic and eddy current measurements.

The present examination is a part of project concerning a deformation behavior of duplex type ferritic-austenitic stainless steels. The investigations included the analysis of ferrite and austenite microstructures formed in cold-rolled sheet of super-duplex stainless steel, major deformation mechanisms operating in both constituent phases and changes in morphology of two-phase structure after the thermo-mechanical treatment and subsequent cold-rolling. Duplex type stainless steels develop the band-like ferrite-austenite morphology in the course of hot- and cold-rolling. This specific two-phase structure creates different conditions for plastic deformation in comparison to single phase steels. The interaction of both phases upon deformation exerts fairly significant influence on structure and texture formation in both constituent phases and in consequence affects the material properties and its behavior upon further processing.

This study proposes a probability of detection (POD) model to quantitatively evaluate the capability of eddy current testing to detect flaws on the inner surface of pressure vessels cladded by stainless steel and in the presence of high noise level. Welded plate samples with drill holes were prepared to simulate corrosion that typically appears on the inner surface of large-scale pressure vessels. The signals generated by the drill holes and the noise caused by the weld were examined using eddy current testing. A hit/miss-based POD model with multiple flaw parameters and multiple signal features was proposed to analyze the measured signals. It is shown that the proposed model is able to more reasonably characterize the detectability of eddy current signals compared to conventional models that consider a single signal feature.
