Natural Barriers and Internal Sources for the Reproductive Isolation in Sympatric Salmonids from the Lake–River System

AbstractBackgroundThe origin of species is a central topic in biology aiming at understanding mechanisms, level and rate of diversification. Ecological speciation is an important driver in adaptive radiation during post-glacial intra-lacustrine niche diversification in fishes. The Arctic charr Salvelinus alpinus L. species complex in the Northern hemisphere freshwater systems display huge morphological and life history divergence in lakes with one or several morphs present, thus offering a unique opportunity to address ongoing speciation mechanisms.We studied Arctic charr in Lake Tinnsjøen by fishing in four nominal lake habitats (pelagial, littoral, shallow-moderate profundal, and deep-profundal habitats) down to 350 meters depth. Research topics addressed were; (1) to illuminate Holarctic phylogeography and lineages colonizing Lake Tinnsjøen, (2) to estimate reproductive isolation of morphs or fish using unbiased methods, and (3) to document eco-morphological and life history trait divergence. Also, we compared Lake Tinnsjøen with four Norwegian outgroup populations of Arctic charr.ResultsFour field-assigned morphs were identified in Lake Tinnsjøen; the planktivore morph in all habitats except deep-profundal, the dwarf morph in shallow-moderate profundal, the piscivore morph in shallow-moderate profundal (less in littoral and deep-profundal), and an undescribed new morph – the abyssal morph in the deep-profundal only. The morphs displayed extensive life history variation based on age and size patterns. A moderate to high concordance was observed between field-assigned morphs and four unbiased genetic clusters obtained from microsatellite variation. MtDNA suggested the occurrence of two minor endemic clades in Lake Tinnsjøen likely originating from one widespread colonizing clade in the Holarctic. All morphs were genetically differentiated at microsatellites (FST: 0.12-0.20; with some ongoing gene flow among morphs, and for most mtDNA comparisons (FST: 0.04-0.38). Analyses of Norwegian outgroup lakes implied colonization from a river system below Lake Tinnsjøen.ConclusionOur findings suggest post-glacial adaptive radiation of one colonizing mtDNA lineage with divergent niche specialization along a depth-temperature-productivity-pressure gradient. Concordance between reproductive isolation and the realized habitat of the morphs imply that ecological speciation may be the mechanism of divergence. Particularly novel is the extensive morph diversification with depth into the often unexplored deep-water profundal habitat, suggesting we may have systematically underestimated biodiversity present in lakes.

A discriminant analysis was made of 17 morphometric and 10 meristic characters in the freshwater form (leiurus) of threespine stickleback (Gasterosteus aculeatus) from 16 localities in the Sangan River System on the Queen Charlotte archipelago and in the presumed ancestral form (trachurus) from a nearby locality in marine waters. While multivariate means were significantly different between trachurus and leiurus, there was even greater differentiation between the leiurus populations found in lakes, ponds, and streams, divergence which was independent of geographical distance between localities. Statistical removal of meristics, removal of body length, log transformation and size standardization of all morphometries did not substantially alter the discrimination of the populations. Two of the leiurus populations that overlap in a narrow zone appear to have achieved reproductive isolation.

Much has been learned from the basin of the Candelaria River, Campeche, Mexico: the fabric of a densely settled pre-Historic landscape, including impressive ceremonial centers; the logistics of an ancient entrepôt; the process of exploitation of dyewood and chicle in historic times; as well as the doubtful results of the mid-twentieth-century colonization of an “empty” forested basin. It also yielded the first evidence of more or less intensive pre-Hispanic wetland agriculture in the Maya region and the remains of a profuse network of fluvial transportation from prehistoric times to the present. This article presents recent evidence regarding the management of the river system itself by means of barriers, or “dams,” which facilitated agriculture in the wetlands upstream and extensive canoe travel. These structures seem to be elaborations or imitations of the numerous natural barriers already in the stream. Two models help explain context and function. It has become apparent that the human interventions into the wetlands and the river system are to be seen less as great attainments of civilization than as fairly desperate expedients in the face of climate change.

Recently, the Asian rivers have faced the strong reduction of riverine total suspended solids (TSS) flux due to numerous dam/reservoir impoundment. The Red river system is a typical example of the Southeast Asian rivers that has been strongly impacted by reservoir impoundment in both China and Vietnam, especially in the recent period. It is known that the reduction in total suspended solids may lead to the decrease of some associated elements, including nutrients (N, P, Si) which may affect coastal ecosystems. In this paper, we establish the empirical relationship between total suspended solids and total phosphorus concentrations in water environment of the Red river in its downstream section from Hanoi city to the Ba Lat estuary based on the sampling campaigns conducted in the dry and wet seasons in 2017, 2018 and 2019. The results show a clear relationship with significant coefficient between total suspended solids and total phosphorus in the downstream Red river. It is expressed by a simple equation y = 0.0226x0.3867 where x and y stand for total suspended solids and total phosphorus concentrations (mg/l) respectively with the r2 value of 0.757. This equation enables a reasonable prediction of total phosphorus concentrations of the downstream Red river when the observed data of total suspended solids concentrations are available. Thus, this work opens up the way for further studies on the calculation of the total phosphorus over longer timescales using daily available total suspended solids values.

Relevance. In connection with the development of nuclear energy, many aquatic ecosystems have been exposed to radioactive substances. Fish, as an element of biota, is capable to accumulate radionuclides. However, fish is a traditional food. The control of the technogenic radionuclides accumulation level in the ichthyofauna is an important link in ensuring human security.Intention. To analyze the long-term data on the content of long-lived technogenic radionuclides 90Sr and 137Cs in the ichthyofauna of the Ob-Irtysh river system for the period from 2004 to 2016 and Beloyarsky pond for the period from 1977 to 2018.Methodology. Fish as a food product was assessed according to two criteria: a) permissible levels of specific activity of radionuclides (SanPiN 2.3.2.1078-01); b) using the indicator of conformity B and the uncertainty of its definition В (GOST 32161-2013 and GOST 32163-2013).Results and Discussion. Fish of all species that live in the river Tetcha, is not suitable for food use according to the criteria of SanPiN 2.3.2.1078-01, GOST 32161-2013 and GOST 32163-2013. The fish of the Ob-Irtysh river system, the habitat of which is located outside the Tetcha, meets the requirements for fish products. In the period from 1977 to 1989 in the Beloyarsk pond the accumulations of technogenic radionuclides in fish in quantities exceeding sanitary and hygienic standards were possible. Currently, the fish of the Beloyarsky pond fully complies with the sanitary and hygienic requirements for the radiation factor and is safe for human consumption.Conclusion. In the ponds exposed to the atomic energy enterprises, it is necessary to continuously monitor the content of long-lived technogenic radionuclides in fish and assess their amount in accordance with the requirements of SanPiN 2.3.2.1078-01 and using the conformity indicator В and the uncertainty of its determination В.
