Gastrointestinal stromal tumors are rare tumors, originating from the interstitial cells of Cajal. They are the most common mesenchymal tumors of the gastrointestinal tract. Metastatic tumor is treated with imatinib mesylate. A case of large metastases of a gastrointestinal stromal tumor to the omentum, diagnosis and treatment principles are presented in this case report.

The use of carbon nanotubes in various filtration devices is a promising current direction in nano-technology. The direction of progress is, however, far from obvious when it involves devices that can allow water to be transferred while blocking proton transport. This problem is addressed in the present paper by exploiting the perspective that emerge from our recent studies of the mechanism of proton blockage in aquaporins. The paper focuses on a computational study of the free energy barriers for transfer of proton and water molecules through the membrane assembled from the double wall (5;5)@(10;10) armchair carbon nanotubes. It shows that such system can be used as a water nano filter that allows water transfer while blocking protons. Thus such carbon nanotube membrane will work as an artificial analog of aquaporin water channel. The general mechanisms of proton transfer/blockage in biological and artificial nanosystems are also discussed.

Introduction. In patients with extra-adrenal malignancy, an adrenal mass necessitates investigating the possibility of metastatic tumor. Curable adrenal metastasis are considered as a rare event.Case report. A 52-year-old male suffering from lower esophageal adenocarcinoma with a solitary left adrenal metastasis is presented herein, who underwent concomitant transhiatal esophagectomy and left adrenalectomy. The patient remains disease-free 18 months later.Discussion. Adrenal metastases mostly occur in patients with lung, kidney, breast, and gastrointestinal carcinomas. Primary esophageal adenocarcinoma gives adrenal metastatic deposits according to autopsy series with an incidence of about 3%–12%. When no other evidence of metastatic disease in cancer patients exists, several authors advocate adrenalectomy with curative intent. Isolated cases of long-term survival after resection of solitary adrenal metastasis from esophageal adenocarcinoma, like in our case, have been reported only as case reports.Conclusion. This study concludes that surgical resection may result in survival benefit in selected patients with solitary adrenal metastasis from esophageal adenocarcinoma.

Pulmonary metastasis from leiomyosarcoma is rare and its clinical management is challenging. A single lung metastasis from a perineal leiomyosarcoma occurred in a 79-year-old woman. Five months after resection of the lung metastasis, a new metastatic tumor developed in the contralateral lung. Since the patient did not desire to receive hospitalized treatment, TS-1 (an oral agent consisting of a combination of tegafur, gimeracil, and oteracil potassium) therapy was started on an outpatient basis. The lung metastasis has been successfully controlled for at least 17 months with excellent tolerability. The clinical features and the treatment of this case are discussed.
