AbstractMobile health (m-health) has shown positive effects on disease prevention; however, several factors might influence its effectiveness, particularly in low- and middle-income countries. Randomized trials provide data with high internal validity but no major information on population impact. We conducted a pilot population-based study to assess the feasibility of cancer prevention through m-health in a Latin American population. A sample of affiliates to a health insurance company in Colombia was randomly selected and assigned to receive a short message service (SMS) or voice messages (VMS) during 4 weeks; weekly frequencies 2 and 7. Baseline and post-intervention surveys were conducted. Overall, 797 affiliates were contacted (SMS 393, VMS 404) but only 15.3% and 24.8% enrolled, respectively. Over 80% acceptability was observed among participants for all items evaluated (usefulness, understandability, timing, and frequency); however, 2-VMS per week was the only frequency consistent with the declared number of messages received and listened. Other frequencies resulted in high reception recall but low willingness to read/listen the messages. The willingness to be part of future programs was 20.0%. The gap between declared acceptability and practice, low participation rates, and low willingness to read/listen messages indicate m-health should be part of multicomponent interventions and should not be conceived as the sole intervention.

Background Stroke burden is highest and is still rising in low- and middle-income countries. Epidemiologic stroke data are lacking in many of these countries. Stroke prevalence in Argentina has been unexplored for almost three decades. Aim This population-based study aims to determine prevalence of stroke in a representative sample of the Argentinean population. Methods We performed a door-to-door survey of randomly selected households in a city of 18,650 inhabitants. A structured questionnaire screening for potential stroke cases was used. All subjects screened positive were then evaluated by stroke neurologists for final adjudication. Data about stroke subtypes, neurological status, vascular risk factors, medications, and diagnostic tests were also collected. Results Among 2156 surveys, 294 were screened positive for a possible stroke. After neurological evaluation, there were 41 confirmed cases. The adjusted stroke prevalence was 1,974/100,000 inhabitants older than 40 years, and it was higher in men than in women (26.3‰ vs 13.2‰, p<0.01). Prevalence of ischemic stroke, intracranial hemorrhage, and transient ischemic attack were 15.8‰, 2.93‰, and 2.93‰, respectively. The most prevalent vascular risk factors in stroke survivors were hypertension, obstructive sleep apnea, and dyslipidemia. Conclusion Approximately 2 in every 100 subjects older than 40 years in this population are stroke survivors. Stroke prevalence in Argentina has remained stable over the last 30 years; it is higher than in most Latin American countries and similar to western populations.

OBJECTIVE: To determine if there are existing healthcare access inequities among the deaf Chilean population when compared to the general Chilean population. METHODS: Data were obtained from a population-based national survey in Chile. In total, 745 prelingually deaf individuals were identified. The number of times the person used the healthcare system was dichotomized and analyzed using a multivariate logistic regression model. RESULTS: Prelingually deaf people had lower incomes, fewer years of education, and greater rates of unemployment and poverty when compared with the general population. Moreover, they visited more general practitioners, mental health specialists, and other medical specialists. On average, they attended more appointments for depression but had fewer general checkups and gynecological appointments than the general population. CONCLUSIONS: Deaf people in Chile have a lower socioeconomic status than the rest of the Chilean population. The results from this study are similar to the findings reported for high-income countries, despite differences in the magnitude of the associations between being deaf and healthcare access. Further studies should be conducted to determine the health status of deaf people in Chile and other Latin American countries and what factors are associated with a significantly lower prevalence of gynecological appointments among deaf women when compared with non-deaf women.
