In a number of manufacturing processes, tooling installation, calibration and maintenance guarantee the precision of fixtures and play important roles towards the overall quality of products. Recently a new type of measurement equipment called “laser tracker” was developed and utilized for assembly fixture calibration to shorten calibration time and improve the accuracy of the currently used theodolite systems. Though, the calibration of assembly fixture is critical for product quality, the calibration time creates significant burden for productivity of multi-station assembly processes. In order to shorten the calibration lead time, the number of necessary calibration setups which is determined by visibility analysis needs to be minimized. This paper presents a screen space transformation based visibility analysis that allows minimizing the number of setups. The screen space transformation is applied to transform the visibility problem from 3D to 2D space, consequently the visibility problem can be solved efficiently. A case study illustrates the procedure and verifies the validity of the proposed methodology.

Many times forensic engineers are asked to evaluate the visibility of objects involved in accidents. For example they might be asked to determine if a pedestrian should have been visible to the driver of an oncoming car. The visibility of an object depends on the relative size of the object in the visual field, the level of ambient lighting, the contrast between the object and its surroundings, and whether glare sources are present. Equations and results based upon empirical studies can be used to access visibility using these factors. This paper outlines the basic tools of visibility analysis and presents a case study to illustrate their application.

Even though landscape quality is largely a subjective issue, the integration of infrastructure into landscapes has been identified as a key element of sustainability. In a spatial planning context, the landscape impacts that are generated by infrastructures are commonly quantified through visibility analysis. In this study, we develop a new method of visibility analysis and apply it in a case study of a reservoir (Plastiras dam in Greece). The methodology combines common visibility analysis with a stochastic tool for visual-impacts evaluation; points that generate high visual contrasts in landscapes are considered Focus Points (FPs) and their clustering in landscapes is analyzed trying to answer two questions: (1) How does the clustering of Focus Points (FPs) impact the aesthetic value of the landscape? (2) How can the visual impacts of these FPs be evaluated? Visual clustering is calculated utilizing a stochastic analysis of generated Zones of Theoretical Visibility. Based on the results, we argue that if the visual effect of groups of FPs is positive, then the optimal sitting of FPs should be in the direction of faint clustering, whereas if the effect is negative, the optimal sitting of FPs should be directed to intense clustering. In order to optimize the landscape integration of infrastructure, this method could be a useful analytical tool for environmental impact assessment or a monitoring tool for a project’s managing authorities. This is demonstrated through the case study of Plastiras’ reservoir, where the clustering of positively perceived FPs is found to be an overlooked attribute of its perception as a highly sustainable infrastructure project.

Islamic architecture can be studied from different aspects. This paper introduces a religious place in Bushehr city of Iran, a Bahrah or Hosseiniye that is used in especial religious ceremony and was built a century ago and after recent renovations is still in use and applicable. The research tries to quantify and analyze its visual quality as an important quality in the built environment with a tool called isovist in Syntax 2D software. In this study isovist indexes of six different spaces have been evaluated in this. The research shows interesting findings of spatial form and location and its visibility; for example it shows that spaces with circulation role have more visibility also spaces of the higher floor show higher visibility than the ground floor.

Keywords: Visibility analysis, Syntax2D, religious space, isovist, Barhah

A new algorithm, named feature-based visibility analysis is proposed. This algorithm can be used widely in manufacture and process of parts or models. Compared with conventional triangle facet algorithm, the proposed feature-based algorithm can get global visibility more efficiency and accurately. The main visibility analysis consists of two steps: 1) Local visibility analysis. All features are classified into two types-features with local visibility and without local visibility. 2) Global visibility analysis. All features with local visibility should be analyzed further to detect whether the local visibility feature is sheltered by the other part of the model. In this paper, related principle and implement process (on UG flat) are introduced detailly. At last, the case study demonstrated the validity of the proposed method.
