AbstractThe low masses of irregular galaxies change the behavior of their interstellar medium (ISM) compared to that of normal spirals, so the role of magnetic fields in the ISM in irregulars may be very different than in spirals. We present high-resolution and high-sensitivity observations of the magnetic fields of two irregular galaxies: NGC 4214 and NGC 1569.

The success in clinical practice of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a result of the symbiosis of the science of NMR with the computer and the availability of appropriate magnetic fields. A brief survey with some history is presented of NMR phenomena which are basic to the interpretation of MRI signals. Special exotic effects or procedures, such as stochastic NMR and line narrowing techniques of high-resolution NMR spectroscopy have a potential to play a role in future MRI systems.

ABSTRACTThe origin of the complex photoluminescence line series often observed in MBE-grown GaAs has been the subject of considerable recent study. We report on the results of high resolution, high sensitivity resonant excitation measurements which conclusively prove the lines to result from the recombination of excitons bound to a series of acceptors. New details of the properties of the bound excitons and acceptors are revealed. The direct connection between this acceptor series and an often-observed series of broader, lower energy lines is also established. Some preliminary studies of this line series under applied magnetic fields are also described.
