Temporal frequency discrimination in human vision: Evidence for an additional mechanism in the low spatial and high temporal frequency region

We have measured the retention of information about stimulus speed in visual short-term memory by measuring speed discrimination in a two-interval forced-choice task. We have also measured such discrimination in conditions where a ‘memory masker’ is presented during the interstimulus interval (ISI) in a fashion analogous to the experiment of Magnussen et al (1991 Vision Research31 1213 – 1219). Magnussen et al found that spatial frequency discrimination was disrupted when the mask had a spatial frequency that differed from the test spatial frequency by an octave or more. We have investigated the speed discrimination of 8 Hz, 1 cycle deg−1 drifting sine-wave gratings with the following drifting masks presented in the ISI: (i) 8 Hz 1 cycle deg−1, same direction as the test; (ii) 8 Hz, 8 cycles deg−1, opposite direction to the test; (iii) 8 Hz, 8 cycles deg−1, same direction as the test; (iv) 24 Hz, 3 cycles deg−1, same direction as the test. These masks were chosen to investigate whether the temporal frequency, the spatial frequency, the speed, or the direction of motion of the mask affected retention. We found that in none of these conditions was the discrimination of the test gratings impaired significantly. This pattern of results is therefore different from that found with spatial frequency discrimination and suggests that, whatever mechanism is responsible for the retention of information about speed, it is different from that responsible for the retention of information about spatial frequency.

Abstract Permanently installed SHM systems are now a viable alternative to traditional periodic inspection (NDT). However, their industrial use is limited and this paper reviews the steps required in developing practical SHM systems. The transducers used in SHM are fixed in location, whereas in NDT they are generally scanned. The aim is to reach similar performance with high temporal frequency, low spatial frequency SHM data to that achievable with conventional high spatial frequency, low temporal frequency NDT inspections. It is shown that this can be done via change tracking algorithms such as the Generalized Likelihood Ratio (GLR) but this depends on the input data being normally distributed, which can only be achieved if signal changes due to variations in the operating conditions are satisfactorily compensated; there has been much recent progress on this topic and this is reviewed. Since SHM systems can generate large volumes of data, it is essential to convert the data to actionable information, and this step must be addressed in SHM system design. It is also essential to validate the performance of installed SHM systems, and a methodology analogous to the model assisted POD (MAPOD) scheme used in NDT has been proposed. This uses measurements obtained from the SHM system installed on a typical undamaged structure to capture signal changes due to environmental and other effects, and to superpose the signal due to damage growth obtained from finite element predictions. There is a substantial research agenda to support the wider adoption of SHM and this is discussed.

This paper reports estimates of the conjoint spatiotemporal tuning functions of the neural mechanisms of the human vision system which detect image motion. The functions were derived from measurements of the minimum contrast necessary to detect the direction of drift of a sinusoidal grating, in the presence of phase-reversed masking gratings of various spatial and temporal frequencies. A mask of similar spatial and temporal frequencies to the test grating reduces sensitivity considerably, whereas one differing greatly in spatial or temporal frequency has little or no effect. The results show that for test gratings drifting at 8 Hz, the tuning function is bandpass in both space and time, peaked at the temporal and spatial frequency (SF) of the test (SFs were 0.1, 1 or 5 c deg –1 ; c represents cycles throughout). For a grating of 5 c deg –1 drifting at 0.3 Hz, the function is bandpass in space but lowpass in time. Fourier transform of the frequency results yields a function in space-time which we term the ‘spatiotemporal receptive field’. For movement detectors (bandpass in space and time) the fields comprise alternating ridges of opposing polarity, elongated in space-time along the preferred velocity axis of the detector. We suggest that this organization explains how detectors analyse form and motion concurrently and accounts, at least in part, for a variety of perceptual phenomena, including summation, reduction of motion smear, metacontrast, stroboscopic motion and spatiotemporal interpolation.
